reason to use beams?
As someone who cant tell their ass from a hole in the ground ingame, what is the incentive for getting beams over lasers, plasma or ballistics?

The Beam weapons have a near-perfect accuracy, and generally tend to 'burn a neat hole' through armour and get at the structure. They are also good at 'turret sniping'

Depending on your enemy and your tactics, these may be valuable points.

Ballistics tend to be high damage over time, but less accurate, and liable to suffer from deflections. Once you have chewed past armour, hits to structure tend to be bigger (this is mostly due to the 'shape' of their damage, they're more affected by 'blue layers' of armour.

Depending on your enemy and tactics, these may be valuable points.

Energy cannon tend to be middle of the road, although with more variety in their effect. Antimatter cannons rip massive chunks out of the enemies, plasmatics slice through armour like some sort of amazing slicing thing, projectors saturate space with massive volleys.

Depending on your enemy and tactics, these may be valuable points.

Basic lasers are basic. Nice accuracy, neat damage pattern, decent rate of fire.

If nothing else, lasers will work, although may be less useful for geven enemies and tactics.

Finally - the random tech tree may dictate what you get access to more so than any grand pans you had for tactics.

thanks, I've heard some people talk about beam lasers like they are the second coming of christ so I wanted to know what advantiges there are.

The second... and the third.

Forum lurker here. Thanks for info. I have a question. Putting x3 light weapon turret on a large mount is better or worse than x1 heavy weapon? Basically i'm trying to figure out what are the reasons for x3 light weapon, x2 medium weapon, or x1 large weapon turrets.

The only thing that I can figure out is that a small mount x3 might do more damage with the combined damage output of the whatever it is, then a large x1 or a medium x2

an example of this effect that I can think of would be triple barreled fusion cannon vs the heavy mass driver, induvidually the projectiles do less damage, but together they do more.

A formation of ships in line abreast all focus firing at the same target with beam lasers. Thats my reason.

In general, every combination is viable, in different situations, and for different reasons, but mostly, triple light weapons are not as good as a single heavy.

Twin lights in a medium, or twin mediums in a heavy are generally pretty good, depending on exactly what it is you are doing (IE 2 phasers is better than a single particle beam, but comparing to a single positron beam is a much closer call)

However, there are times when it might be worth while., some examples:

In your combat leviathan, you may have no light mounts. Placing variable lasers and setting them to PD mode allows you to still have some PD capability.

A ship intended to defend against asteroids may be better off with tripple pulse lasers than a single particle beam, as rate of fire matters a lot more.

A pair of war quoits will have better armour penetration, range, and accuracy than a fusion cannon if you are facing heavilly armoured enemies, conversely, the fusion cannon would be better for base busting.

A pair of fusion cannons is never as good as a heavy fusion cannon, unless you are really tight for power and crew, but are probably better than a heavy plasma cannon.

Indeed, there are hardly ever examples where one choice is always better than the others. You can however, have choices that are more useful in more situations. It is rare that a meson cannon is a bad choice, for example - but even than, it can happen.

For what it is worth though - I would hardly ever use a triple beam laser over a particle beam. Even x-ray beamers - the penetration and critical effects of the particle beam compared to the amount that armour affects the smaller beam weapons make it a particle beam win. Perhaps against light drones or planetary missiles the beam laser would be 'just right' and more effective than the particle beam. Maybe.

Beams are purdy! Also, they strip turrets real nice.

High-level beams, especially the antimatter tier ones, may also cause epilepcy.

If you ever manage to get the pulsed graviton beam tech you'd never go back.

As a Hiver player, I mostly just throw rocks at things really hard. It works for me ^_^

The problem is that experimenting with weapons takes a lot of time, and the in-game stats leave out important information. (the shape of the damage for instance)
Thankfully, not only you can see all weapon details in the game files, they are also summarized on the wiki :
