(Note: even though Steam says I have less then 1 hour played in this game, that is incorrect, as I have several hundred hours played, I just don't use Steam when playing)
Victoria 2 is probably one of the best but most complicated strategy games ever made. The sheer scale and scope of it will blow your mind if you haven't played a Paradox game before (actually it still will even if you have). But once you start to understand its systems and the time period, your mind will really be expanded. The politics system and the economics alone are more detailed, realistic and complex than anything outside of a high-level supercomputer simulation (and certainly more so then any other game I know of).
It is daunting to learn the complexity of this game, but fortunately you don't really need to master all the systems in order to be able to play fairly well (you can get-by without understanding everything). And the more you play the more you'll master it and, like I said, by the time you've done that you will literally be a smarter person. The game's mechanics are complex enough that you cannot really predict the outcome of things in the long run (like which countries will come to dominate), because it's all based on complex systems interactive with other complex systems to create the ultimate complexity. Which does a good job of simulating human history,
The vanilla game is good, but it gets much better with mods. Of which there are lots. There's tweak mods, overhaul mods, alternate history mods, etc. But the one I would recommend for both improved gameplay and improved realism is POP Demand Mod (it's probably the closest you'll get to actually directing history).
This is a game where you take a nation from the 19th century, very much into the 20th. You can industrialise as an advanced European colonial power, or start as a primitive country (like say China or Japan) and if you play right, you can race ahead and catch up and even overtake the Europeans. By the end of a game you're likely to be in a very interesting world, with Monarchies, Democracies, Fascist and Communist states fighting it out in world wars. You will never have the same end-game world in more than one playthrough, so you're creating alternate history as you go.
If you're into hardcore strategy and/or history, then you've got to experience this game.
