DEP crashes games always. Validate ALWAYS finds file wrong.
I bought Krater Collector edition + DLC Mayhem mk13. I have Vista fully updated, GeForce 9600 GSO with latest driver.
Game crashes 100% of the time due to Data Execution Prevention. Every time I Validate Integrity it always finds something wrong and says it will fix it, it never does and finds something wrong the next time I try it right after. Tried uninstalling and redownloading, several times, still nothing. Going on 7-8 hours straight I've tried to get this to run trying everything suggested. I've had similar problems with Magicka and other games and eventually got them to work by this time of trying all these different things.

First of all..I understand your frustration of buying something that atm isn't working on your pc. It's annoying and well..just annoying as hell (especially when you want to play and enjoy your sparetime)

However developers never test their programs on every single hardware configuration that exist, thus they can never say this will work 100% certainty on every single PC (there are literally millions of different configuration possibilities for pc's).
In theory most game developers are selling a product they 'hope' will work on every single hardware configuration within their min setting specs, but in truth they don't know if it will.

When it comes to laws and what not, it is not fraud to sell you a product that neither you nor the developer knows will work on your pc or not, however depending on the country you live in, if you have bought a product that isn't working on your pc when it according to the specifications should, then you should be entitled to a refund. However it depends on where and how you bought it.
Though, I haven't looked into how all this refunds business works with steam.

Though, since I see you have also had similar problems with other games, have you considered that maybe the problem is your windows installation and not the games ? A windows installation that have been corrupted can cause these problems.

Anyway, there is a few things you can try to get Krater running.

1. I know this will sound dumb since you wrote your system is fully updated, have you checked that your windows vista is fully updated, there is some optional updates that are required for Krater to run properly, so please check windows update again. I Don't mean to sound ignorant or anything, there just was another user sometime ago with a similar problem and it was solved by updating windows with some of the optional updates (I'm sorry but I don't know which ones it is, just that it is needed for Vista)

2. Try running steam as administrator, validate integrity of game cache and try running the game after

3. go to : x:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\krater
find krater.exe and run_game.exe
set these 2 to run as administrator in their properties
Run steam as administrator, run game

Let me know if any of the options work or not

I deleted the first paragraph before trying anything. I had woke up excited to play the game I bought the day before and 8 hours of stress later my body was shutting down and needed another 8hr rest.

I checked Windows Update, the only things were Windows Live Essentials which I installed. The only other 2 things were the Bing Toolbar I didn't install (but I guess I'll try now though don't know why Krater would use it), and Malicious Software removal thing that only runs and not installs anything. I also ran vcredist_x86 in the Krater/install directory, and the dxsetup in the krater/install/DirectX Feb 2010 directories as admin (again). I restarted computer in case anything needed to be there on startup. I ran Steam as admin and set both krater and run_game exe's to run as admin, Validated Integrity which found something wrong again and supposedly fixed again. Ran Krater and still not working.

well the bing toolbar i'm pretty sure have nothing to do with it, so no need to install that.

Could you check in the C:\Users\[yourusername]\AppData\Roaming\Fatshark\Krater
and see if there is any files in the console_logs folder or the crash_dumps folder
if so just take the most recent one and paste on or similar site and post the link here.
Not sure there is any at all since you seem having trouble getting it started, but I'm hoping there is on in crash dumps that might give a better hint as to what is causing the trouble.

if it is the vcredistribution going wrong, then it needs to be manually removed before installing it again(I recommend uninstalling it in safemode), go into add/remove programs and choose uninstall the one it is trying to install (it should be mvc++ redistribution 2010 x86 - 10.0.40219).
Reboot into windows run steam as admin and try to run the game again..hopefully it will now install VC distribution properly

Grr. It was Windows after all. I ran WinUpdate half a dozen times earlier keeping on installing stuff before my last post. Despite that it chose not to update the updater itself until I tried checking for updates again, after a taking a break for a few hours, to install that Bing thing and only then it decided to show me almost 100 updates! (which took me another 4hrs to install a handfull at a time)

Krater started up last time I tried, but I exited to post this before playing.
If any devs saw my first post pre-edit (which I doubt) my sincere appologies for misplaced stressed-out rage post.

No worries, I'm pretty sure the devs understand your frustration perfectly (trust me being a dev is pretty stressing and frustrating sometimes when things that should work, don't).

Anyway, I'm happy you got it to work :-) just a little sad that you had to spend so much time trouble shooting and installing things that in truth should have been updated by windows itself already
