Don't they call it Half-Life 3 now?

(Might as well say what I did on the Black Mesa forums...)

I want HL3 to have advanced graphical features, and a material property based physics system. As in, every wall, floor, object and person instead of just being models, has the molecular properties it should. Sort of like an extremely advanced DMM. Glass breaks with a certain amount of force, and fractures appropriately. A Gravity Gun could rip off splinters of wood and skewer enemies with it. Rather than an "explosive barrel" igniting after a few gunshots, the barrel is made of a "metal material" encasing an "explosive gas material". A bullet penetrates the "metal" casing, and the "gas" may or may not explode depending on the friction and power of the projectile. The hole flexes realistically and if the gas hasn't already ignited, it will leak out over time, or might even cause a slow burn if shot twice.

The "weaponizers" leaked in the Dota 2 Client a while back would work with this "material engine". It might warp the physical properties of the world around Gordon. "Weaponizer_Liquid/Metal/Concrete" could take in matter from liquid, metal, or concrete sources. Probably even be able to change the states of these sources. Freezing water to walk over it, shooting molten metal at enemies, "phasing" (by which I mean temporarily turning into gas to walk through) a concrete wall. Maybe even being able to trap enemies in walls of ice/concrete/metal. I imagine it might be HL3's gravity gun.

Check out this concept art https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=375966239135637&set=a.375965635802364.86003.274276235971305&type=3&theater.

(One of the guys in the forums I posted this in, thought this might relate to the reality warping speculation I threw out there. This is my reply...)

I thought that was just artistic interpretation of Xen, but yeah that could be it. Maybe he has to take the weapon from the Advisor chasing him. It would of course be Borealis tech, maybe an alternate attempt at the Anti-Mass Spectrometer by Aperture, but it destabilizes the material it carries. They couldn't get it to work without ripping apart the molecules/atoms of the object it "grabs" so they re-focused their development, and made that the focus of the project. It's complete enough to not work on living or otherwise complex material.

Man, I hope I see this game soon...

What disappointed me, is that Valve has released next to nothing about HL3. I mean, they have not said a single thing about it for the past, what, 7 years?

5 years since EP2 was released.
8 years since HL2 was released.

And yeah, don't expect anything soon, they are focused in anything but a new HL.

Either they want it to be mindblowingly awesome, so they wait until they can introduce the next milestone of videogames with the next part. Or they lost interest because the story seems to be a dead end. They might focus on Portal and maybe other games that also take place in the HL-Universe, until HL is forgotten forever :/
Maybe they realised that HL 2 was too linear for today's gamingexperience and they haven't found the right way to change that without losing the uniquness of playing Gordon Freeman like it used to be.
Maybe you can compare it to Stephen King's Dark Tower Series, he startet writing as a young man and came to an end after two decades and is still adding something after three. Besides he has established many ties between the Series and his other books.
I guess the idea of HL needs to change and grow until the guy at Valve are satisfied with the outcome. It may be difficult to follow up on the last cliffhanger with a new concept, though.

And I also don't like the idea of that ship they were talking about and snowy terrain is also not my favourit. I want to go to Xen once more, with other Humans that were drawn there too (in a human body, not in an altered hostbody...) but that's just me.

Well that stuff about Source 2 has come up, then disappeared.. I'm sure that's something there that hints that HL3 will be on a new engine.

Still don't get why people insist on referring to 'HL3', that implies you want them to forget about finishing the HL2 story arc and move on to something new entirely.

What I heard about it is that the way they produce a game is just pretty chaotic. They might've had 50% of Ep3 finished, when they decided to discontinue the process because they might've felt it was not good enough.

Halflife and Halflife 2 are seen as some of the best titles of all time, this forces them to try to achieve this same high standard for HL3. That implies the gameplay has to be innovative, the storyline has to be very compelling and the graphics must be as immersive as possible. There can not even be a debate about how HL3 compares to other games. This perfectionism is the cause of this delay and we should respect it. If you have a perfectionist personality you will also know however how paralysing this can be in terms of bringing a project to release state.

I doubt that it's even being made. I mean, if I live to see Ep3/HL3 I'll be very very surprised.

I believe they are keeping it a secret, Gabe revealed that they are working on it in an interview months ago, codenamed it "ricochet 2". But gave no date and no other information. After they hacked and stolen HL2, I guess it's very compreensible. And HL was released in 1998 and HL2 in 2004, compare how much more complex is to build a game today and the fact that they are building their own modified engine, and the standards people have about HL franchise. This is the game that gives life, meaning, to Valve, and they can't make it wrong, it must be a 10/10. I guess even 8 years to build it and it will be early on schedule.

I don't know about the DOTA 2 coding placement containing hl2e3, maybe it was place there to troll the fanbase. Either way i think valve like to troll their fanbase and make them suffer :)

How could you not like that ship? It's the Borealis from Portal!!!
