Solution for crash at the start

Right click "Half Life 2, Episode 2" in the library and choose "properties".
Select the beta tab and then select steampipe beta (filling out the code is not necessary).
Steam will then start to update the game and (in my case) the problem was fixed.

nah, hitting Z doesnt help. theres the same floaty problem in HL2 E1, too. its almost like im swimming, and i dont move as fast, jump as high, or stop as sharply. this is really bugging me. help plz?

EDIT: Got it! From another discussion, using the console command sv_alternateticks 0 has solved my problem!

I'm stuck on the bit on "This Vortal Coil" where Gordon gets out of the lift and the Vortigaunts are trying to save Alyx. As soon as the G Man says "Dr Freeman" the game crashes. I've tried verifying integrity of game cache and selecting beta mode. None of this has fixed it. :(

Position the settings like that before starting new game.
Open the video tab, change resoultion to something but remember dont click cancel, ok or apply. Just wait for freeze, the click Apply. Worked for me.

No way to change that setting. it's frozen as soon as it hits the main menu, which is really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ weird because I get really good graphics + Fps on the last 2 games. (HL2 and HL2 ep1)
