Character Editing?
Is it possible to edit the BT1 characters? All the editors I've found are MSDOS and refer to a TPW file (which no longer seem to even exist?). Anyone know if it's possible?

Been searching for a way myself...The file that should have the characters on them is bt1d2.2mg. But I have not been able to find any way to edit it...yet...the hunt is on!

Nope...and the file that has the characters is actually s5d2_bt1...seems that if a person could find a way to edit that file...but still looking...

Right, the File is the bt1d2.2mg
You can edit there many things,
i just work on a Editor,
Spellpoints, Hitpoints, Money, Items, Name - no Problem,
but can't find the stats like Dex, Cn, Luck ...
For quick Hint, say want you want to Edit - i give you the Hex Offset.
... or you test my Editor (Visual Basic 6 Runtimes will be needed) on own Risk

Stats (St, IQ, Dx, Cn, Lk and some fixed stat, which purpose I haven't found, but it seems to be constant during all the gameplay) are combined in offsets 0x10, 0x11, 0x12 and 0x13.
I've written characters importer from BT1 2GS to DOS (just for my own needs). :)

I see that too, but it seems to be a date/time stamp,(the only data which changes every save)
not enough data for skills from 6 Character...

Link follows - hope tomorrow
its one thing to it for myself, and then do it for more :-)

!!! FIRST at ALL : BACKUP YOUR "bt1d2.2mg" File from Steam/ Bards Tale !!!!!!
(that is the "SaveGame")

then Install :http://rapidshare.com/share/A98FFA1AE919161BF4B507645A34F0CB

only the .exe 1.0 : http://rapidshare.com/share/F23A97C1484AF489C346159EF5915326

(Necroing a bit.)

@Gambler:
Could you please make those files available again somewhere else?
I've been trying to hex edit that file for a while now without success, and I would love to try your work!

One thing you should be aware of is that the Apple ][ Bard's Tale characters had a checksum stored at the 128th (or 64th, I forget exactly which one) byte of the "block" for characterrs. Modifying any stat will make the character unloadable UNLESS

1. You can independently recalculate the checksum (which I never learned how to do because I would actually edit the physical sectors of my character disks back in the day)

OR

2. Load the character's TEAM. This somehow bypasses the integrity check and as a bonus, BT1 will recalculate the proper checksum for you when it resaves the team when you go back to the Adventurer's Guild and save off all progress.
I have not had any luck editing the apple files that are embeded with the new Bards Tale game. The arent typical TPW files. All three original Bard's Tale games are freeware though so you can download Dosbox which is also freeware and play them in Dosbox. You can also download multiple dos versions of the character editors and run them in Dosbox.

Go to the link below for the games, character editors, and a bunch of other nice stuff. This site also has versions of the game for the Amiga, Commodore and several other systems. I was able to get the Amiga version to run but not this sites file. I had to get a different version of the file that WinUAE emulator recoginzed. Search Killa Gorilla if you are interested in all things Amiga. I wasn't able to edit the Amiga charcter files either. My recomendation is stick with the Dos version if you want to edit.

Go here for dosbox and get the win 32 installer if you are running windows 32 or 64 bit.

http://www.dosbox.com/download.php?main=1

Go here for a random forum I found with directions on how to configure dosbox:
