Bards Tale 1: Can't get past screen that wants me to transfer characters
The game loads, but as soon as I hit the spacebar to get past the bard singing his song a screen comes up requiring that I transfer characters from another game. I can't get past it to create a new party. Can anyone please help?

Have done it? Well for me I have hit one of save disks which saves your game... and works fine...

Is this the IIgs version (with decent music)? If so, did you press S for Start Bard's Tale? What happened next?

I push S to start and then then next message says it needs to know which disk do you to save the characters to. After that I get 4 options: Slot 6 Drive 2, Slot 6 Drive 1, Slot 5 Drive 2, Slot 5 Drive 2.

And there is no way past that.

No way past other than picking slot 5 drive 2 as the game says?
I mean you probably should say what you do and what happens instead of "no way past".

One known problem is that it doesn't work right unless run in XP compatibility mode, but I don't think you'd see those symptoms for that cause.

Sorry about not saying what happens. If I select one of the drives I get a message that says IO Error, press any key to continue. Then it takes me back to the selection screen that says "Do you wish to transfer characters from"

Hm, I'm not running in XP compatibility mode. Maybe that's my problem. How would I do that?

I'm not sure how to launch an application in XP compatibility mode if the application uses steamworks DRM. If it doesn't, it's just a matter of right-clicking on the icon and in properties choosing windows xp compatibility mode.

However, I'm pretty sure you're just not following the on-screen instructions to choose slot-5 disk 2.

They're provided as part of the series of popups for "press f1 for help and f4 for maps" and so on.

Are you also not choosing S for start and slot-5 disk 2? And are you also not interested in providing any useful information to go on?
