I had the error but found out my screen resolution isn't large enough. It requires 768 pixels in height.
Vonder0420 Sep 26, 2012 @ 11:50am
At first did not start for me either, but I downloaded the exe (from humble bundle) and installed it. That worked and now the steam version works just fine. Even after uninstaling the humble bundle version.

My screen's 1600x900, so the error shouldn't be caused by an improper resolution. I checked the integrity, nothing wrong, deleted and downloaded it again, same error. What Vonder says seems like the Steam version has something or another ♥♥♥♥ed up for file directories, like it's looking in the wrong place for something or that file just happens to be in the wrong place or wan't downloaded properly.

Windows 7 64 bit, by the way.

I had the same error (my resolution is 1280x720). I could run the game (even though I don't know how to play it lol). Edit on Notepad the file C:\Users\[your user]\Documents\My Games\GratuitousSpaceBattles\prefs.ini, set your resolution there and it'll run. (My OS: Win 7 Ultimate x64)

I had to manually install the directx the game came packaged with in steam in order to get it to start

Had Error on startup in XP here. Was due to screen resolution here also. Thanks for the posts pointing this out. Game just errored without any explanation why. My prefered resolution is 1280x720 (16x9 w/h ratio) but had to go to 1600x900 to fit my monitor. I may try a screen-res less than this so things will be bigger so I can tell what I'm looking at.
