Most people love this game for the extreme atmosphere. It's probably the best example "post-apocalyptic" without actually being post-apocalyptic. The STALKER series takes place near and in Pripyat, Ukraine. In this world, the 1986 Chernobyl disaster released a magical and anomalous effect in the surrounding area named "The Zone". Outside of The Zone, the world continues as normal, however adventure and fortune seeking individuals smuggle themselves into the Zone to acquire artifacts, anomalous objects that are often used in and outside the zone for their beneficial properties, such as absorbing radiation or regenerating health.
I'm sure you can read more about the world of STALKER in another review or on the wiki page. For this game, you're playing as guy sent into the Zone to investigate crashed helicopters. Your can also go on side-quests given to you by various fractions. Some of these quests are time limited once you accept them, so don't pile on a ton like you would in Skyrim.
The combat in this game is pretty fun. You're far from a bullet sponge, specially in your basic armor. Firefights with bandits and other humans requires hit-and-run tactics, and taking hits causes blood loss which can be stopped with medkits and bandages. The Zone's monsters range from four-legged beasts that charge at you, zombies that are surprisingly accurate with their firearms, various humanoid creatures that leap long distances or attempt to control the minds of you and people around you.
The graphics are dated and the firearm animations are janky; however, this game series has rather productive modding community. Check out hubs like /r/stalker on reddit for lists of popular mods (including the popular MISERY mod that dramatically increases difficulty).
One thing to note, this game has more text than dialog. Most of it is optional, but on my first playthrough, I was blindly following map markers, not really knowing why I was doing the things tasked to me. It greatly detracts from the wonderful atmosphere of this game, so make sure to pay attention and read the text.
