I want to buy this game, but...
20 dollars seems like a bit too much for it. I wish I knew about this game when it went on sale during the holidays. I'll get it eventually....

Anyway, what are the must have mods for first playthrough?
I was looking around and it seems like Absolute Structures, Absolute Nature 3, and Atmosfear 3 are the good ones.

Any others?

I would suggest the complete mod, it's the only mod I used on my first playthrough.

Complete makes the game rather easy and less challenging. I would go for either Misery 1.0 or Atmosfear.

For a first time play through? Friggin hell no. Atmosfear. Yes. Misery. No.

Go for complete. It's not my fave mod but it's a genuine improvement rather than an overhaul and complete brutalising of difficulty.

Play Misery once you've finished the game at least once and if you felt it was too easy.

Seconded. Complete is designed to only change things that won't affect the vision of the developers. They don't always succeed, but it's their stated goal to keep the game as close to vanilla as they can while improving everything.

Misery proactively change the experience. You aren't playing the game as it was intended by the developers but rather the game as it was desired by the modding community.

It may be an excellent vision, but it's fundamentally different.

As such playing with it on your first playthrough is the absolute wrong thing to do.

Hell, most gamers I've seen advise playing vanilla first before installing Complete.

20 bucks is totally worth it for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. but i'd advise playing a mod-free playthrough for you're first time.

I've used Complete (it's handy and decent but a tad weak with graphics compared to others). I've used misery - meh... If you're an expert at the game it's OK but I'm not a fan.

Here are some screenshots of a couple mods I like.

I have AtmosFear3 loaded -- weather can mess you up on some missions (and spook you a bit - I had both a fallout & chem storm hit while recruiting some ex-monolith NPC's... I had a psi-storm hit while I was supposed to 1-shot some guys. It wouldn't kill them but would kill me, I had to back up & restore the mission, etc..) - small stuff, good app.

I have Absolute Nature 3 loaded with autum type settings. Very colorful with thick folage & tall grass in many areas. Makes hunting a bit trickier vs other color palet options.

I have Absolute structures loaded - very, very nice texturing on buildings.

Absolute scopes - simply to change some of the color palet of the scopes. I'm more an "amber" look than the green tones the stock ones use. I had to tweak it a bit in settings files to get targeting straightened out (it always shot to the left of the target spot - I set the width to 1800<something> - default size of image - and it straightened out.)

Here are 3 screen shots:

Pre-dawn in Pripyat - scene checking sewer. Light fog and dim light at about 4:30AM game-time.

Only play MISERY once you've mastered the zone, bro, MISERY is'nt forgiving, only true veterans of soviet russia can withstand MISERY's grasp and even then , only those changed and claimed by the zone can hope to make it through the days of MISERY.

I actually had to install Complete in order to actually be able to play the game or else it would constantly crash and take 10min to load... The hardware i have is not the problem either. Regardless great game and i am enjoying it so far, give it a chance, if you like this type of game i would bet you will enjoy this and get your moneys worth out of it.
