CoP is pretty great without any mods, though. Try it first without anything and see how you like it.
Wait, what does complete change about the gameplay? I was under the impression it was a texture/lighting/sound upgrade. The only gameplay changes I know about are that it removes the head bob(thankfully), NPC stalkers now remove bodys from camps, changed the gun names to real names, I think it added a sleeping bag to your backpack and they now have anti rad injections? If thats the majority of things it changed I am OK with that. It still seems to have the exact same atmosphere, setting, story and quests.
So it seems most of you recommend CoP vanilla..What about CS? But man, if SoC is this pretty with just the complete mod installed I can only imagine what CoP looks like with it installed.
Yeah, it's still "marketed" like that, and no-one in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. community seems to understand why, because it does a lot more. Guns are more accurate, and do slightly less damage, you can carry 10 kg more (a big difference), enemies see a lot shorter, so you most often see them first, etc etc.
Bottom line: I'm not saying Complete is bad. If that's what you want, go for it, but it's not "just a graphics mod", and it does make the game a lot easier.
Like the earlier posters, I recommend playing the game unmodded the first time. Personally I also prefer Master difficulty, when you die as easily as enemies do, forcing you to think and act very tactically.
I'm trying to play misery (I never played Call of Pripyat before, I'm also playing shadow of Chernobyl with the complete mod) so I decided to start Call of Pripyat with the misery mod since so much people talk about it, and it's awesome, but it's freaking HARD.
the problem of playing misery and CoP for the first time, that you have to learn how the actual game works (because it's a little bit diferent from SoC) and you also have to learn how to survive misery, because it's very hard at the begining, it does start to get a little bit easier once you know the stuff, but I had to go to youtube and watch a few playthroughs, so I could know where some stuff are.
Because serious it's hard.
and the actual game is hard as well, it have this emissions that happens almost like at random, and if you get cought outside and without a place to get cover, that's it, you are done.
and the whole aspect that you have to really search for itens and your medkits will do nothing, and you can't carry too much stuff.
it also adds kits (like Sniper kit - Have a 35kg badpack / Recon kit - have a 30 kg badpack / and the assault kit - 40 kg badpack) so basically it adds a lot of stuff that you are not used to it in the stalker games, and you also have to survive the game.. so it's hard.
(btw these kits also have their own perks like the sniper have better handling with the sniper and his sniper rifle will take longer to degrade.
the Recon class will have better effect with medkits food etc.. and he is also faster than the others, and his suits will take longer to degrade.
the assault kit is the slowest one he can carry more stuff, and he is speciallized on assault rifles and Shotguns.)
And for a first timer there will be a lot of frustration, and without a lot of patient you won't be able to play for too long, so I recommend to either watch a playthrough on youtube while you are playing so you can have some kind of direction and "guide" to survive the game, or play the vanilla or the complete mod first then after that go for misery..
If you do play misery, download the two patchs available, since they will fix a few issues with the mod (the stamina issues)
however, What I think of misery is that it's an AWESOME mod, it really makes you feel like you are very weak and everything around you will pretty much kill you very fast if you are not prepared to survive the misery.
Just play vanilla first. Complete is also very nice, but it does make the game a little easier. Only slightly though. I quite like it because it makes the game look great.
Once you're used to the game, download Misery. It really adds a lot to the atmosphere.
There are a couple of excellent lush foliage mods that I highly recommend though, as the ground textures in CoP are kind of ugly.
