I believe I fixed the random crashing during gameplay.
For starters you need to turn off Steam Overlay, as it seems to cause problems for both games.

Next you should do a direct shortcut from the game folder. Do not run it via Steam.
Just to be sure you should play it in offline mode.

Now comes the most important part: Go to USER/AppData/Roaming/BioshockHD/Bioshock2

Open Bioshock2SP.ini and look for the entry [Havok] and make sure it looks as follows:

[Havok]
HavokNumThreads=1
RebuildMoppWhenMissingOrOld=1

And right below there is the entry [Engine.RenderConfig]. Make sure it is set as follows:

[Engine.RenderConfig]
HDRSceneExpBias=-3
MaxSkeletalProjectorsPerActor=6
OffsetSkeletalProjectorRearFrustrumPlane=10.000000
UseSoftwareAntiAliasing=True
EdgeDetectCutoff=0.002000
EdgeBlurSize=0.500000
StreamingVisibleWeight=10.000000
StreamingDiffuseWeight=1.000000
StreamingBSPWeight=1.000000
StreamingEmissiveWeight=7.000000
StreamingLightmapWeight=5.000000
StreamingNormalmapWeight=4.000000
StreamingDynamicLoadedWeight=10.000000
StreamingDistanceScale=1000.000000
HighDetailShaders=True
Shadows=True
RealTimeReflection=True
PostProcessing=True
HardwareOcclusion=True
UseRippleSystem=True
UseSpecCubeMap=True
UseDistortion=True
HorizontalFOVLock=True;
HorizontalFOVLockPS4=True;
HorizontalFOVLockXB1=True;
LevelOfAnisotropy=16
UseVSync = True;
UseFxaa = True;
UseMultithreadedRendering = True;
EnableStereoVision=False
ForceGlobalLighting=False
CascadingWaterSimulationVelocity=10.000000
UseHighDetailPostProcEffects=True
BloomStar=True
UseHighDetailSoftParticles=True
UseMultithreading=True
DisableExtraAntiPortalClip=True
TextureDetail=High
FluidSurfaceDetail=High
DynamicShadowDetail=High
TextureStreamingMemoryLimit=512.000000
TextureStreamingDistanceLimit=30000.000000
UseMultithreadedRendering=0
UseVSync=1
UseFxaa=1

This should do the trick. At least it did for me. Try it out and see if this works for you too.

I'm wondering, too. So far, nothing has helped fixing the random crashes for me. It used to work flawlessly for the first three hours, then it froze once, and ever since then, it has kept crashing after a few minutes of gameplay each time I tried playing. It's a pity, really, because the remaster of the first game works flawlessly for me from start to finish. In the original Bioshock 2, I simply had to turn offf Direct X 10 to keep it from crashing. Nonetheless, I may still give it another try.

No, I'm using Win 7 and it did work for me.

Why do they use ; behind some TRUE values? That's really strange and i've never seen that before in any .ini file.
I will try this later. Was about to give up on the Remaster, and just re-install the original release. Heard good things about the patch but, bam, just as before, I can't even get the thing to run for fifteen minutes without crashing.

Sorry to necro a thread, Tested and it still works but to an extent. The game will still crash on any major explosives that can't for some reason RENDER, and that will crash it.

But in all and all, this works! it hasn't crashed yet! will do more testing and let everyone know!

Alright after some more testing, it confirms that everytime you use an explosive and it goes off, the game for some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ reason, can't render it and it crashessa

That's odd, because it never crashed on me when I used explosives. Granted, I didn't use explosives that much, but as far as I could tell, explosions did not cause crashes in my playthroughs.

Hm, interesting. Explosives have an impact, so maybe it is all related to physic simulation.
MommaBee Mar 11, 2018 @ 4:39am
Possibly yea, its not so much as USING the explosives, its more all the partical effects, sorta like in new vegas, when a partical effecat was to much or "out of place" the game would crash. its basically the same with bioshock

The crashing seems to still be an issue for me no matter what I do especially in Siren Alley where the Rumbler Big Daddy is just causing chaos. In the patch notes it says to let 2k know if there are any issues and I've just submitted a bug report. I'd recommend doing the same if anyone still has problems, maybe they will take notice and fix it. https://support.2k.com/hc/en-us
