Anything but Legends, cause it can ruin your first impression

stronghold 2.
Walls are a joke in Stronghold 1 and crusader (singleplayer).

I've played all the SH games except for Stronghold 3 at the moment, and I have to say there is no best. They're all good in their own ways.

Crusader 1 is probably the most well rounded and deepest. Overall better than Stronghold 1 given that it basically expands on every aspect of that game, although Stronghold 1 is still a great game (and at times I prefer the grassy visuals over the Crusader desert).

Stronghold 2 is the best in terms of castle simulation and economic management. I haven't played this one too much but had a blast in the short amount of time I had in the campaign.

Legends is the best in terms of offensive play- there are a ton of troops to play with, most with unique abilities. It recently got an update so you can play online via Steam. Biggest downside for me is you can only have up to 4 lords in a game as opposed to 8. Again though, TONS of troops to play with which leads to a lot of interesting strategies.

At the end of the day you can't go wrong with any of the games in the collection. Perhaps start with the 1st and just work your way through them, as starting with a newer title may make the dated graphics of the older (but generally better) games harder to take in.

Stronghold 2 is the most complex of them all. Stronghold 1 and Crusader 1 are much simpler.
Depends really what u like...

My favorite is Crusader 2 , it got some problems , but is very enjoyable

The best in the series for me are Stronghold Crusader and Stronghold 2.

I agree with Aeroplane. I've played and own all the Stronghold games except SH 3 which by all written accounts is not worth the money even on sale. Myself I started last fall with SH Crusader HD, then wanting to improve, tried Stronghold HD. In January I began Crusader 2 and really enjoyed that despite some of the bad reviews. Sept 30th I bought the SH collection on sale for about $4.60 Cdn to get SH 2 and SH Legends. Been playing both of these the past 10 days and really digging them. If I were to offer any advice it would be to start with Stronghold HD and move on when you feel comfortable. I should warn you a couple of the missions in Stronghold HD are extremely difficult and may require you to creatively compute someone else's saved game file into your system in order to win. Happy gaming!

I assume you refer to the mission to siege the pig's castle?
Ah good times, had to play that one many many times before i won haha

Yes that is the mission in question. I read back in the day that mission actually stopped a great many players from ever completing the game. Also there are some reports of game versions in different countries having varying levels of difficulty for that mission. A German gent posted somewhere here about his original German game version being much less difficult for that mission than the version he has now on steam. Regardless Stronghold HD is an RTS classic and should be on the game list of genre enthusiasts everywhere.

I remember me completing it with filling the moat from the side (a big big moat) and then putting a siege tower to the walls and send all my remaining troops straight into the keep.

tbh in order i would say crusader (the food contest for land was great at starting conflicts and the maps were better.)

then SH 2 though i was always disappointed with the MP maps being so freaking small in most locations. wasted potential.

SH 1 had better maps than 2 even with the free zone build mechanic. (place your keep rocks)

then there is... legends.... ♥♥♥♥ maps, ♥♥♥♥ unique units, the walls lack variation, less content aside from units in every other way. just.. dont touch this if you can avoid it.. seriously its toxic.

Legends is extremly unbalanced...

SH2 for the win ever since 2005! Good mix between building up an economy and war strategy. The others are kind of a childish attempt, not complex enough for my taste or too many units (Crusader), too fast and unbalanced (Legends), too slow (SH3). Can't wait for multiplayer to come back without having to use game ranger.

I like Stronghold 2 and how diverse the Building types are and the great campaign. The only thing I do not like is how you are forced to build courthouses/gong pits etc. while AI lords do not. Also I don't like how they change some things around (can no longer bet money in jousting arenas/lord doesn't attend them).
