Steam for Linux Support?
I missed the Humble Indie Bundle that had a working Linux Super Meat Boy, but own the game on Steam. When will Super Meat boy be released for Steam for Linux?
---------------------------------------------------
Well, SMB is finally here on Linux! Go ahead and play!
For any bugs, go ahead and post them here, but this is the listed location to do so:

A couple of people have asked about SMB and other games in the Steam for Linux forum. Here's a link to Frank's answer.

Thanks for the link.
But Frank's answer you are referring to is not really helping.
He is not answering a SMB specific question. All he is saying is that they will update their support page to reflect games that became available on steam for linux after their port is done and the steam team got the approval from the game devs.
BUT: Since SMB was released in a Humble Bundle, the port already exists and it is also running without issues. So the only thing that could be missing is the approval from the SMB devs to release the port on steam for linux.
I will try to get in contact with the SMB devs to see what the situation here really is and report back.

Ok, I tried to figure out what's wrong here. Sadly I didn't find a way to directly contact team meat, the developers behind SMB. They only offer a forum which looks totally unmoderated to me, so that's pointless. Also, the question about getting SMB for linux has already been raised in their forum many times.

LONG STORY SHORT: We WILL probably NEVER SEE SMB DISTRIBUTED THROUGH STEAM FOR LINUX, because the SMB devs don't care about linux at all.

LONG STORY: Jookia claims in his post on the SMB forum, that the linux port was only done because it was a requirement for the game to be part of a humble bundle at that time. He also says that the port wasn't even produced by team meat themselves but instead by well known linux game porting developer ryan icculus gordon. (see forum post here: http://supermeatboy.com/forum/index.php/topic,2240.msg28807.html#msg28807).

In conclusion: The port exists, but since it's not by the original devs but instead was created by icculus (who probably isn't allowed to give steam an upload approval for the port) and since team meat doesn't seem to care much about linux, it is very unlikely that we will see SMB for linux on steam.

I asked about it via Formspring[4ms.me] and Edmund gave pretty clear answer: "no". So that's about it. The Binding of Isaac will be available on Linux (or at least Edmund is talking to them about it) so it probably is not a problem with HIB providing the port, they're likely to just feel they're finished with SMB already. And I kind of understand since Edmund has already published three titles after SMB (if you count TBoI and WoTL separate), and Team Meat is working on two new games for multiple platforms so coming back to an older game would probably feel bothersome. They already gave us Cloud support so they have pretty much done everything they promised.

Well it's true that SMB isn't the newest game anymore, but still the question remains: If the linux port already exists, why not release it on steam? I can't imagine that this would need a lot of work since the major part, the port itself, is already there.

This is depressing. SMB is one of my favorite games on Steam. No Steam for Linux version means no Steambox version as well.
Footissimo 12 jan 2013 à 15h14
Well, that's a little pants =/ Thanks for the clear responses.

Well at least I know who to NOT buy from in future, if they don't care about Linux users then I don't care about them.
rudeboyskunk 5 fév 2013 à 6h07
Ok, so a) a Linux version exists, b) it will never be on Steam because bla bla bla and c) I bought it through Steam because a Linux version exists. Therefore I'm out the money I spent.

Will anybody buy this ♥♥♥♥ off of me then? I refuse to buy from game makers that don't provide Linux versions of their games (because otherwise I wouldn't be able to play said game...), and so now want my money back.
Kuhaa 5 fév 2013 à 8h12
They're not selling it as a Linux game on Steam (or anywhere else for that matter) so you can't really blame them. And it looks lik you have already added the game to your library so I'm afraid nobody can buy it off of you.
rudeboyskunk 5 fév 2013 à 15h46
Well AWESOME they have my money for nothing, won't be supporting them in the future

It seems the "no" I received earlier wasn't as final as it seemed. This from his Formspring[4ms.me]:

Q: ...Is there any reason why you don't want to put Linux version of SMB on Steam? As far as I know, you already have got a port, as it was required for HIB4. We, Linux users would really appreciate a native Meat Boy of Steam.

A: ill ask them about this, we talked about it last month but i haven heard anything yet

SMB is nice game, but with Wine on Linux it's not so cool - normally work with PlayOnLinux(Steam) only 800x640 on my widescreen FullHD display.

Sounds like he's just trying to shut the linux users up. I want my money back.
