Two steam accounts on the same PC - save files conflicting
I couldn't find anywhere else talking about this (apologies if there is an old thread), so I thought I'd start a new one to see if anyone knows any solutions.

I have a Win7 PC with two Steam users, using the same Steam installation, we just regularly switch user etc. We also have our own windows user profiles, but that seems pretty irrelevant to Steam in general anyway.

For most games this is no problem at all, but for SMB it cause a problem as the save file is in the same common location for BOTH users:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\super meat boy\UserData\

So essentially, both users share the same save game! This is not a lot of fun if we want to have our own progress, achievements etc.

Anyone got any ideas why this is coded in this bizarre way or any ways to get around it? I guess two separate Steam installations would work but I really don't want to do that as we have many of the same games and they run fine.

perhaps only one seperate installation with only SMB installed?

I have the same problem, sharing this computer with my brother and it happens on Super Scribblenauts as well.

On Super Scribblenauts, we ended up having to turn off cloud sync and manually move our save data from the proper save folder to somewhere else whenever we wanted to play.

For example when I want to play, I'll cut and paste HIS save data to my desktop then paste MY save data back in to the UserData folder. Then when I'm done playing, I'll put his back in the UserData folder and move mine somewhere else.

It works perfectly fine on Scribblenauts to do this (although it's bothersome and annoying), but I'm not exactly sure if this will work with SMB.

The reason being: I'm not exactly sure where all the save data goes, and I don't want to remove any files that I need. I know there's a UserData folder, but then there are some files that I'm not quite sure what they are and if it's safe to move them.

I'm just gonna subscribe to this discussion though. :P

Thanks KlawwTheClown & Day for the responses :-) I appreciate you taking the time to write...

Klaww - I am sure that will work for SMB as well, but it's a huge pain and actually makes Steam worse than the old days of PC saves. I'm hoping to avoid having to do it, but it's definitely a valid last resport.

Day - Later I am going to experiment and see if this works ok. I will report back when I've tried it :)

Ok. I've been able to get this working.

Getting two Steam installs to run ok was a bit weird - copied all the non /steamapps files into a special "Steam SMB" location, then ran Steam, let it update & install itself properly. Then I put in the SMB files apart from the save games. Disabled cloud saves on SMB (just in case), and now we both have a working SMB with our own save, as long as I always launch SMB from it's own separate dedicated Steam!

It's a rather inellegant solution to say the least, but for now it appears to be the only option.

Shame on Steam & games devs for allowing this kind of bad coding tho :-(

probably it would have been easier, if you only copy the steam.exe to the new directory, let it install und export and import the smb game (and savegames). for the next one who has the same problem ;)
