How do I use the Xbox controller on my pc?

I plugged in my xbox controller and the light woulden't come on so if you know anything i can do please help

It should install the correct driver when plugging it in, if not visit the following link and download the drivers from there:
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-gb/d/xbox-360-controller-for-windows

Then just fire up the game with the controller plugged in and everything should work.
