Lore
So I just got the game, been going through the tutorials, seems like I'm going to have a blast learning and getting better at it. However I'm unable to find any lore-related information other than what's on the store page, the wiki has a bunch of strategy information and advice but nothing on the premise of the game or why you are where you are and why you do what you do.

Some background is really nice to have to get immersed in the game, as it's one of the main reasons I play a lot of games that I normally wouldn't (like Assassins Creed). Granted I haven't started a full campaign yet so I don't know if more is explained when you do, but somehow I doubt it is. Right now I feel it's a bit BattleStar Galactica like which is great since I'm in the middle of watching the series and I love it. So, any info?

Yes it's hard to find informations about the Lore. You will get missions and messages during gameplay which gives some informations, but it's not much.

The human race did split into two factions during the galaxy's expansion. They fought for a very long time, and finally had enough of this war. They both started to develop a war AI to do the bad work for them. Both AIs were fighting each others. Everything was fine...

Until the AIs decided they also had enough, and allied themselves against the human race. Which was no match and got wiped off the galaxy's surface. A few bubbles of resistance were still alive when both AIs stopped to attack the humans. Apparently an alien force from outside the galaxy got its attention.

You play the last remaining humans, and you have to use this miraculous diversion to strike back and destroy the AIs.

Some speculate that the AI knew that the humans were going to destroy each other to extinction. The only option for the AI to save the humans was to turn against them, hopefully forcing the humans to work together and overcome their hatred towards one another.

Chris' first announcement post in this group also provides more lore explanation, it's over here all lonesome!

Thanks a lot, that certainly provides some background, I guess it's as much as we're getting.

I suppose Chris intentionally left it ambiguous so expansions can mesh together a more organic puzzle as to what the galaxy was before the AI's rebellion and triumph without being restricted to a preplanned storyboard, and of course saving that time for development.

We'll probably learn a lot more if and when an expansion is released based on whatever immense outside threat is attacking the AI, or something more clever than that.

Actually, the precise cause(s) of the human/AI war are shrouded in quite a bit more mystery than that text suggests. For example, we know that the design of the AI we are currently fighting is beyond human understanding, and that at least one faction of the Spire assisted in its creation. Like the Spire, the AI has some ability to sense/manipulate the quantum nature of the universe, but the Spire consider AI tech to be "unharmonious." AI tech causes them some distress and might be harmful to their normal way of life. Finally, the AI did not "discover" the Spire; rather, at least one branch/faction of human military intelligence had contact with them.

It is hinted that the AI has some fundamental similarity to or relationship with the Neinzul hives.

Somehow the Zenith plotline gets worked in too along the way - apparently, some event in the distand past "screwed up" most of the extradimensional energy/force in our galaxy. This event may have been caused by the Zenith, possibly bringing about the collapse of their empire. I guess stupid, agressive, 11D-ignorant apes came to evolve and dominate the galaxy in the aftermath.

Strangely, the Zenith view the AI with apparent indifference.

To my knowledge, the only concrete history we have revolves around the events of the Battle of Sol, which was apparently the climax of the human/AI war. This battle resulted in the desruction of the Earth's biosphere, IIRC probably by human agency.

As for the human civil war, there is plenty of visual evidence of destruction on a planetary scale. Hints of old rivalries pop up from time to time - for example, friction develops between the epsilon eridani miners and the IMT (remnants of some former human military/government).
