Is anyone else not a fan of the sword fighting in this game?

Just started this game and I'm struggling with the sword fighting mechanics in this game. I can't beat the guy training the recruits because unlike in the first risen game, this game doesn't give you a sidestep that you can skillfully use in fights. It seems like sword fighting depends only on attacking and parrying. Theres no counter parrying in the beginning of this game :/

It's hard but gets better. When on the Tacarigua, I don't recommend doing a particular mission where you have to follow a pirate at night since it requires a fairly large amount of sword play. Come back to it later.

It is hard in the beginning... do quests in towns until you get the one's where they follow you in the jungle areas, then use NPC to help clear areas.... no doubt, this game's fughting mechanics are taxing but it does go from unwinnable to frustrating to winnable... eventually...

I would even say that it is quite a bit of fun at the end, though fighting monsters still isnt very "smooth". So just keep up and enjoy the atmosphere of this game ;)

Moving backwards and using the sword to move forward helps a bit sometimes :D

It's OK to me. You can sideroll by tapping the 'w' or 'd' twice. I think you have block with holding down right mouse. (Hold it and then strike when you see the opening. Same as Risen 1. Discovering block was a game changer for me in Risen 1. I have barely used it in Risen2, but I am sure it's the same.)

When on Tacarigua, don't make your way to Steelbeard straight away. Do him last, because until you see speak to him, Patty stays with you. She is invaluable at defeating monsters. Enemies she defeats you still get the 'glory' for aswell.
