Risen 2 does continue after Risen 1 an you play the same character. However, the story and setting are so different you really lose nothing if you don't play Risen 1...However Risen 1 is a FAR better game than this (not saying this is bad), so you definitely should play it.

I like R2 quite a bit, so if R1 is *far* better, it must be awesome!

No, I played Risen 2 before Risen 1 and Risen 2 is a stand alone story and I was good with it. I enjoyed Risen 2's story without knowing anything about Risen 1.

I actually didn't like Risen 1 too much, but since I liked Risen 2 I didn't mind supporting that company.

Reason i say Risen 1 is better, is because it is a Gothic game. Gothic fans expect Risen to be the new Gothic. Risen 1 was indeed Gothic 4 pretty much, Risen 2 however is nothing like Gothic. It's a fun, goofy pirate RPG but it's nothing like the Gothic games. Which is why a lot of people were disappointed with it.

Ofc if you don't like Gothic then you probably will prefer Risen 2, since its a more traditional linear RPG. if you do prefer the Gothic type games, then Risen 1 is far better, no contest.

I haven't played Risen 1. The story makes sense for me in Risen 2.
I've played Gothic 3, and Risen 2 feels pretty much the same to me, down to the annoying combat against wild life. The pirate setting is refreshing though compared to most fantasy RPG.
