Also, the AIs have neural networks, allowing them to adapt on you (both as ally and as enemy), so after a while of playing against them they will have better responses on your playstyle.
The more you play with them, the better your allies will be able to support you. (The effectiveness also increases with the rounds length, as your long term strategy becomes clearer for the AI).
Map pings are only used for Multiplayer communication, but in the previously mentioned FA-Mod they also worked for the AI. That may explain your confusion.
