Edit. You need one of the Valve games with a source engine. Do you have:
HL2, ep1/ep2
Day of Defeat:Source
Counter Strike:Source?
You do not need all of them. Just one of them. You will not be able to spawn everything without the full list of Valve supported games. But Half Life 2 should give you just enough to make the game playable. Gmod tower for example requires HL2, TF2, And CS:S
Edit:Edit
"The recommendations in order of importance would be:
Hl2 and the episodes (the OB)
CSS
TF2 and portal
Day of Defeat source
Thing is a lot of items you can download and servers will be using episode2 items/textures. What I'd say is, pick up CSS for sure, and gmod. There's a combo pack. Don't worry about tf2, as it's not the primary source for any Gmod items/textures. CSS is, and if you're already owning HL2 (and it's UPDATED to the e2 engine, ie: play it to activate the content) just wait and see. If you're still seeing a LOT of purple/black checkerboards and Error props, it's probably time to just dig in and get the OB - since it has the episodes AND tf2, AND portal."
But it does indeed. Do you just assume that Valve gives away their textures and meshes for free? When you start up garrys mod you can go down and click the little controller in the bottom right corner. That is the games that you have mounted. If you do not own at LEAST a source game. Garrys mod is fairly useless.
"Garry's Mod (officially abbreviated to GMod) is a sandbox physics game that allows the player to manipulate objects and experiment with physics using the Source engine. Garry's Mod has been available on Steam's content delivery service since November 29, 2006. Despite being a standalone game, Garry's Mod requires the user to own at least one game on Steam based on the Source engine, such as Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike: Source, Portal 2, or Team Fortress 2."
Here is a list of Garrys Mod 13 supported games. If you want every single texture avaliable you would have to buy all of these. Keep it mind most servers will not use them. But if you want EVERYTHING you would have to have this entire list.
Team Fortress 2
Half-Life 2 (Episodes One, Two, Half-Life: Source, Half-Life Deathmatch: Source, Half Life 2: Lost Coast, and Half-Life 2: Deathmatch are also supported)
Portal 1 and 2
Counter-Strike: Source
Day of Defeat: Source
Zeno Clash
Left 4 Dead 1 and 2
Zombie Panic: Source
Alien Swarm
Dystopia
Nuclear Dawn
Age of Chivalry
Pirates, Vikings,and Knights 2
D.I.P.R.I.P.
That is true. I am thinking it is most likely a video card issue.
