Guilt
I played Portal for slightly over 2 hours now, and I am able to past all the levels up until 17 and 18, where I'm forced to watch video guides 'cos I got stuck for quite some time. Am I somehow slightly mentally defunct that I can't pass through the final stages on my own? For example, on 18 there's this huge room with photons and turrets. I got the idea of portalling to behind the turrets and knocking them out. It was only after watching the video guide did I realise I was supposed to use the photons to knock the turrets.

Did you guys have similar experiences? Were you able to finish every stage without any help?

There was a Portal game review that I read that said that the solutions to some puzzles are so simple it's hard to find them. However, this is not the case with the advanced chambers so I think you will have more fun solving them.

And to answer the question, I searched help only when solving the advanced version of the chamber you mentioned as an example, and to attain the "Camera Shy" and "Transmission Received" achievements due to them being a major pain at times.

Yes, but that same chamber advanced I haven't finished because it requires extreme accuracy (compared to the main game) to complete. I was able to knock out maybe two of the turrets before I got sick of the precision required and quit.

That's why they are called 'Advanced' chambers. And that perticular chamber can be solved on more then one way, so you do not have to knock down the turrets.

As far as I can remember, I completed it without looking up guides and stuff. We all have different strengths. I got through all of Portal 2 without a guide, ... until the VERY FREAKING END where I totally failed to figure out the final orb thingy. To be fair, I had about 30 seconds to figure it out, repeatedly... I got sick of restarting, spending 30 seconds frantically trying to find a solution, dying, restarting, and so on. >.<
