huge problem with least steps challenge

I watched the guides hosted on youtube and they are great.
But my greatest problem: It takes me 4 steps to even get out of the elevator soI can reach the first portal. There is no way I can earn a gold medal.

Somehow I managed to only use 2 steps for getting out of the elvator on least steps challenge chamber 13, but that took me about half an hour (for only these 2 steps) and I cannot reproduce it.

Can anybody give me a hint?
