This of course depends on what games you like.
If you liked the gameplay of Gothic 1/2 and maybe 3, you should definately chose Risen 1, because even though there is no story-relation to those games it has much more "gothic-feeling" than its actual sequel.
If you like hack and slay games and do not need an open world to have fun, Arcania is pretty much "okay", but there might even be better games than that.

For a Gothic-fan it's definately Risen imo. For a casual-gamer, who wants to try a RPG, Arcania is better, because of playability.

Risen is a much, much - much, deeper RPG. And it is not for the easily frustrated, it can be very tough from beginning to end, even on the easiest difficulty. But I absolutely adored it, one of the finest RPG's ever made.

Arcania Gothic 4 is more of an action game (a very good one at that if you crank up the difficulty), but a very simple (too simple) RPG. I loved Arcania as well once I played it for what it was, it really sucked me into the story and gameworld - and the combat is seriously kick-a*s.

I would get both if you can afford it, and then scratch your deep RPG itch as well as your action game itch. You really can't lose either way.

Risen one of the finest RPG's ever made? Ya right, more like one of the clunkiest RPG's ever made.

Risen 1 definitely. I played it and Risen 2 too. Arcania is very shallow and dumbed up.

I need dumbed up, its going to take me 2 years to finish oblivion.
Tried Risen 2 demo liked it , probably catch that later on.

I have all risen, all gothic, arcania all. each has strengths and weaknesses.
but all of them deserve a round.

Just an opinion. Every bit as valid as yours. And I was commenting on Risen 1 by the way, as Risen 2 has some serious issues with player movement and perpetual stun locks.

Agree with Shane and 19delta3.. if you liked Gothic 1 or 2, you'll definitely want to play Risen 1 (haven't tried 2 yet).

Would it be better to get only the base Arcania game and save a couple of bucks? The first review I read was not very fond of the expansion.

I bought the gold pack just in case I do like the game, you can import your character into the expansion. If you dont get it now it will cost you more than 2.50 to get it later if you end up wanting it.

Thanks for the response. I actually ended up buying gold a few hours ago :)

If you like the gothic 1 & 2 you should still consider risen uses the same type of engine and made by the same people =)
