I'd agree, that most likely there isn't anyone who loves Gothic and likes this one, but Arcania is not a terrible game (not a very good one either) - it just is no "Gothic" whatsoever. Simply an average RPG with a lot of expectations, which it could not (and not even close!) live up to. Risen was waaaaaay better.
Again, it was good but don't expect any form of a proper ending at all. The ending was pretty much broken, thrown together and completely lackluster but up until that point it was visually stunning, especially for it's time. Combat wasn't bad either.
The worst aspect is the NPCs: they have no life cycle (don't sleep at night etc.), don't move from their location, you cannot even hit them (!), you can steal before their eyes, kill their chickens and they won't even stare at you, etc.
No consistent NPCs = no RPG.
Is Steam version updated to latest available patches for this game? I can't find installed version number...
I play a session I actually accomplish things and dont have to worry about how much weight I'm carrying,I enjoy night/day cycles, rain, lightening thunder its all cool.
I never played the earlier Gothic games, tried the demo and decided its not for me,Not being Jaded with expectations, as a stand alone RPG I'm finding Arcania addicting and entertaining and not a tediouse time pit.
I realize the expectations of Gothic fans. But If considered unrelated and a light RPG thats easy to get into, Its been well worth my time.
It even inspired me to reinstall Oblivion (which I'm still working on) because I love the atmosphere of that game....If only I didnt have to check how much crap I need to get rid of so I can keep a gameing rythme rather than held up fiddling with inventory to lighten my load.
The only things I hated about Arcania was the voice acting, the character faces of some NPCs and the ending.
