Risen Vs Gothic Vs Arcania
I own and have beaten Gothic II, and well it is very dated but still a bit fun. Just not for my tastes. Gothic III looks much better in terms of being much easier to get into, but the combat looks bad. Gothic I is just well, more hard to get into then Gothic II by the looks of things. Risen however after playing the demo I loved it, it took what I loved about Gothic and upped everything, but that being said I only played the demo and after owning Risen II I don't know if it will be at the same mediocre standards the sequel contains. Now for Arcania, since Gothic is too difficult to get into, and since Risen is currently priced higher and judging by the sequel may not be that great of a game.. I'm wondering If I should invest into Arcania.. I know nothing about the game, and I'm currently selling cards just to break even for either saving for Risen when it drops, getting Arcania if I can or Gothic III.

In G3 you can wander everwhere in G4 you can't. G4 you just move on to a new area when you have completed the story missions with no option to return to the previous areas. G3 is ok if use a ranged character bow or magic, only the melee sucks and the CP fixes alot of issues with the game. Risen is supposed to be the spiritual successor to the Gothic games. I played Risen on the console the combat was not to my tastes, objectively I would recommend Risen then G3 and lastly G4.
Thanks man, I'll invest in Gothic III then get Risen down the road when it hits a cheaper price.

My opinion for what its worth

Best to worst
Gothic 2
Risen
Gothic
Gothic 3
Arcania

Haven't played Risen 2.

Apparently you didn't like Gothic 2 much. Arcania strips away pretty much everything I love about Gothic 2, so maybe you'll actually like it. It's linear, you don't have to worry about different factions and their flavours... or joining them. You won't have to worry about people getting mad when you steal from them or go into their houses. You won't have to worry about being at a fire to cook, or a smithy to craft weapons. You won't have to worry about challenging combat. You won't have to worry about conversation trees that have any real depth. You won't have to worry about atmosphere, about character, about a world that's full of life. You won't have to worry about killing characters permenantly and never being able to access their quests. You'll never have to worry about falling your death (it's impossible to go off ledges without pressing the jump button). etc. etc. etc.

Maybe it will be your bag.

I really liked Risen, and Risen 2. I bought the whole Gothic series because of what people said about it's similarities with Risen.

I've been playing through the Gothics now and I like the series so far, and I do see how they make the comparisons. I tried the Arcania Demo first before buying anything. I'm glad I bought the whole series. I prefer Gothic 3 and 4 over Gothic 1. Gothic 2 is good as well. The only thing that is holding me back with Gothic 1 is the age, and having to use multiple keys to pick things up and empty chests etc.... the story though I still want to experience so I'll get over the cumbersome key combinations.

I also changed the Gothic.cfg to use the 1080p resolution in Gothic 1 and 2, since I have dual monitors I didn't want a lower resolution conflicting and throwing off my desktop.

I bought the whole Gothic series bundle when it was on sale. I also bought the Risen series with all the DLCs when it was on sale.

I liked Gothic 2, but it was dated and clunky. It really wasn't all that enjoyable for me but I can see why people loved it and I respect their opinions. Risen just seems like it takes Gothic and makes it much easier to move and do simple tasks..where as in Gothic Picking up an item or killing an enemy meant you had to fight with the poor controls.

I played it when it was brand new. Also I played Gothic when it was new, and already understood the mechanics from falling in love with that game. That probably had a lot to do with it.

Risen was very good and the best of the post Gothic 2 games, but for me it missed out on a couple of the things I love most about the first two. Mostly to do with the factions and the atmosphere of it. Something that I haven't seen any other game capture (Skyrim fumbled terribly with the Stormcloaks/Imperials thing).

Yeah Skyrim was a great game..but just doesn't have that sense of immersion or the feeling that you actually matter like the Gothic games did. Though I love RPGs, so whether it be Risen to The Elder Scrolls to Dragon Age I love the differences each franchise takes.
