This is a mixture between character building and city management. You can focus on building your family to take over the economy, or you can run for office where you can climb your way to the top and do whatever you please without anyone questioning you because you have immunity! Or you can do both. Plus there is the part where you show other families that you love them or just beat the dog crap out of them through politics or violence.
The only down side to this game is the fact that it is buggy out the wahzoo. By that I mean people will be sitting down on NOTHING, and a few trading carts will get stuck with other trading carts.
I highly recommend buying this game instead of The Guild II or The Guild II: Pirates of the European Seas because this is not DLC, this is a GAME. This one has all the stuff that is included in Pirates of the European Seas.
I will conclude this review with this statement: If you are a little bit interested in The Guild, just buy this one. I repeat: DO. NOT. BUY. THE. GUILD. II.
