Game crashes when trying to go to 'options'.
Game loads and plays perfectly, except, I can't set any options so I have to play it in very low resolution. This both not from the title screen or ingame ... clicking 'options' crashes the game immediatly. Any workarounds available?

You can change the resolution through the config.lua file (it's in Steam\steamapps\common\spellforce platinum edition\config.lua). Open it in Notepad and find the line that says "ScreenResolution = #" (it's probably 1 in your case) and change the number; the integer can be anything between 1 and 9, with 9 being 1600x1200. I'm not sure what the other resolutions are, so I guess you'll have to experiment, or maybe find it online somewhere. Hope this helps.

There are likely some libraries included in that package that don't come with the latest directX. I'm going to try to hunt down a package that's compatible. I'll report back here with a link if I resolve the issue.

Update: After a bit of hunting, at least in my case I seem to have figured out what the issue is at any rate. It's as I expected, this game like most others like it shipped with and were developed for directX with a specific set of libraries. In my case I run Windows 8 which will not allow you to install DX9. I tried running the game in WindowsXP compatibility mode, but still no joy. Of course I run it as administrator to keep from having to put the key in again, but that doesn't fix the options crash issue.

Microsoft is talking about updating Windows 8 to include the latest two libraries that were introduced which will help with some games that used them. So in the end it'll be a crap shoot as to which old ones I'll be able to play.

Eventually with keeping everything at default, after the first area the game crashes giving the error message "spellforce d3derr_invalidcall".

Since the game doesn't officially support Windows 7 or 8 there's no chance of getting help from the developers. What a complete waste of money.

To stop it from crashing when you click options:

Go to nvidia control panel -> manage 3d settings -> program settings -> click the add button then select the spellfoce.exe in the list -> click add selected program. Then where it says: Select the prefered graphics processor for this game, select the High-performance NVIDIA processor, then click apply at the bottom right of the screen. This is tested and working on windows 8.1 with no compatibility settings just running as admin.

If you only have an Intel GPU I don't know of any fix sorry :(

What do you know? It works.

Now if someone could point me to a fix for the DRIVER_IQRL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, or as I like to think if it, the Windows 8 is buggy mess error that occurs when I don't run compatability modes.
