DAMMIT STEAM!
Ooookay.....so would steam want to get their ♥♥♥♥ toghether and actually look into fixing this access violation crap for the game? The damn patch they did and patches since then seemed to never fix the problem. I bought this game in hopes of enjoyig it again without hassels and stuff since my boxed copy seems to have a faulty CD and I cannot install gothic 2 from it.

I tried with patching, and reinstalling and stuff, and for me it still didn't work. Can't we have a petition or something to get the steam platform devs to look into this ♥♥♥♥? Either fix the damn problem or give us refunds you ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ cheapskates.:died:

The problem is being caused by an update to Steam's community overlay.
Why would the developer have to spend resources to fix a problem that was caused by Steam?

Assuming this problem could even be fixed on the developers side, which I have my doubts for.

Carver is on the spot here Dame. The dev has discontinued the development of further patches a good few years ago....pre 2010 by a lot I think. And just like Carver stated, it's an update that ♥♥♥♥♥♥ everyone over with the game. There's too many of us that had it go all ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ever since a single update. That's it, either they fix this ♥♥♥♥ or I want my money back for their broken and unplayable game because of their own damn app!:died:

I suggest asking for a refund if you have troubling getting the game to work, and getting the games from GoG instead. They work like a charm when you don't have to work with Steam.

Blackguard, I suppose you also tried the patch+modloader in order to start the game?
It prevents Steam from being involved.

There are some exceptions when you use certain hard/software.
I know that Kaspersky and Norton cause problems with the games, and so does certain Logitech software. You can disable these though.

I dont know what to say Carver, the mod itself I didnt try from planet gothic. I know of it. But I just find it ridiculous that in 2014 we are haveing trouble like this. It's their own damn fault. There's soooo many people complaining about this. And yet they do nothing. I wont get my money back anyway, because I got the steam code from somwhere else I recall. I am just very pissed off now. I have 2 versions of gothic 2 NOTR and neither of them works. The CD from the case has the install button grayed out and can't be clicked and steam does the ♥♥♥♥ that it does with the freaking overlay.

If only someone popular would make a freakin video about it maybe they'd move off their fat asses to do something about it :|

Thanks, I will try playing it with that. But it still blows my mind. More and more people complain that they dont fix the steam integration for this game, and they do nothing. ugh. Anyway, thanks again guys.

Because of the last update, run the game through Steam is not possible, only from the directory of the game, or removing the Steam dll.

Follow this, it worked for me

Just a quick guide if none of the other solutions work for you.
Download the following patch and install it. This will downgrade your gothic2.exe from 2.7 to 2.6.
This will only affect the splash screen shown before the game launches by changing it to the German splash.

Then download the following and extract it to your gothic 2 installation folder, and run the GothicStarter.exe found in the System folder. There should only be one option to play, named Gothic 2 Die Nacht Des Raben. This will prevent Steam from being needed to play the game by using a modloader to start the game instead.

If you are having problems with the audio, try the following:

Go into your program file of your Gothic 2 and in work/Data/Scripts/Content/Cutscene and rename OU.DAT to OU.BIN and OU.lsc to OU.csl, and it should work fine after that. (Solution provided by GothChild)

Running the game as administrator & running it at WIndows XP SP3 compatibility worked for me. I'm also running mod to fix the resolution which can be found at: http://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/4-gothic-and-gothic-ii-windows-8-fixes/

Running as admin and compatibility doesnt work, deleting the steam file from the game folder like someone said doesn't fix it either. the only thing left to do is to use the patches from worldgothic.com. And thanks to everyone for the help, but I think I will just uninstall it all toghether.

It's simply an appaling customer service that they are doing in regards to this ♥♥♥♥, as it's the app's fault here not the game. And instead of looking for ways to fix it, as people still complain about this, they are just doing nothing. Thanks steam, in my eyes you are getting nearer and nearer to the Uplay and Origin level of sutomer care nowdays.:died:

They are looking into it,unfortunatly its a downside of having soo many games esp on the older side that use various diff/same apps for compatability between old/new hardware and systems which makes it much harder to pinpoint were the issiue is.

I do wish steam would post about it better tho the lack of feed back is frustrating.

Screw the steam version (one problem atfer another). Use the GOG version. Works like a charm.
Carver Aug 30, 2014 @ 1:51am
For as long as Gothic 2 will still be available on GOG.
Nordic Games is removing all of their games from the site.
