I'm in the same boat. The game says to click to attack, so I click but nothing happens. Then eventually after useless clicking some orc knocks me down and I can't do anything. What the hell?

Welcome to the buggiest game ever made. Did either of you install the community patch yet??

I don't know what that is.

I played the game before the patch and only installed the official patches, never bothered with community patches and didnt have any issues.
Press the corresponding number button to draw the weapon in the hotbar and click mouse to use it.
After you get knocked out, your weapon will be on the ground, have to pick it up or equip another.
IIRC space button also draws the weapon out (if you have one equipped that is).
When you get knocked out your hp will gradually restore so you have to wait a bit.
During the time you are knocked down, some npcs can actually loot you.
You can also knock out NPCs and loot them without having to kill them, they wont hold a grudge either.
Game is not buggy at all and easily one of the best games i ever played.
It can be confusing and maybe frustrating at first, but once you get the hang of it, its awesome.
P.S. the steam version already has the community patch installed.

Looks like the OP has the non-responsive mouse problem, which is a Steam bug not a game bug.
To fix it you should go to Steam/Settings In-Game tab and uncheck the "enable steam community in game" box.

I also played this game long before there even was a community patch, and didn't have any problems. I distinctly remember that, even before any patches, the first thing that happened in the gamer was a window popping up explaining how to take out your weapon and attack. You then had the option of keep revceiving tutorial messages or turning them off.
I've just installed the game earlier tonight and started playing it again, and there it was, just like the first time. I am honestly intrigued by the OP's question; did the window not appear for you? That could be a bug. And yes, wonderful as it is, the game has its share of them...
I also want to add one more recommendation for the Community Patch. It just makes the game that much better.

+1 for community patch - seriously, go get it before you start playing
The game was badly broken in many ways, all of which have been mended by the community. In case you also got Forsaken Gods, the community devs made a fix for that, too. Main target were the original German game versions, but I think English is fully supported as well.
