I like this game but the age really limits it's mechanics. It becomes very samey after a few hours. I feel like if there was a sequel to this game made today, it would be really great. So ill list all the bad points first.
-Ship travel is often SLOW as hell. Especially if you have to travel against the wind (which never changes direction). It could have done with a minimum speed cap based on the ship you have.
-Basic sword fighting. The sword fights are all the same and are quickly cheesed with fast attacks.
-Not much to do. You can marry a daughter (one), Kill 9 other pirates, rank up with each faction, tresure hunt, and do the main story line. Sounds like a lot on paper but then you realize killing pirates are the same as fighting any other person in the game, Ranking up is exactly the same in each faction, each daughter requires the same exact things, and the main story is mostly more pirate hunting stuff. Its extremly limited in variation.
-There really isnt much of a story anyway. Its got open world-itus which means you can go anywhere at anytime but there isnt any structure. The pacing is god awful. and it takes forever to get to the next story point.
In the 6 hours I have played (never played it before) I got to the highest rank in the english faction as well as midway in the other 3, killed all other 9 pirates, had married a daughter and romanced 4 others high enough to marry if I wasnt already, Saved 3 family members in the main story (which involves killing the SAME guy over and over) and gotten most of the items in the game.
All that said though, I did enjoy myself for the most part. The only part I really hated was just how slow ship travel is which would entail me watching a video on another screen while my ship traveled across the map for 10 minutes. I do think its worth picking up if its on sale for very cheap and I do think you will have a decent time with it for a few hours.
Its just held back due to the time period it was released in. Unfortunatley the mechanics dont hold up as well in this day and age. Im surprised a sequel hasnt been made yet seeing the love for the ship battles in Assassins Creed Black Flag though. I feel like it would do wonderfully in the market right now.
