Please bear in mind, the following is my opinion alone. You may disagree with my opinion.
Sid Meier's Pirates! is an old game, but still a good one.
For starters, the map is huge. There are many, many settlements which means many, many ships. More ships means more conflict, which makes for a more fun game.
The duelling system is good, however after about 10 duels or so it becomes mind-numbingly repetitive, and you just end up choosing the rapier and mashing 4 all the time.
I like how there is no "best" ship - sure, the massive ships have a huge hull capacity and they can therefore carry more guns and more crew, but the massive ships are very slow whereas the smaller ships which have a smaller hull capacity and have less cannons are much faster and they can dodge their way out of ramming and situations with superior ships. They can even dodge cannonballs.
The graphics aren't very good, but give the devs a break, it was made in 2004.
There are some cons, like with every game. There is a bug where when you go back onto your ship (when you have gone onto land) with the spyglass still in use, your ship moves ridiculously slowly and the spyglass is still there, meaning you have to go through the incredibly tedious process of turning around at 0.000000001 knots and landing again, then putting away the spyglass and getting back on the ship.
And there is very little variation in the gameplay so after one or two playthroughs it becomes extraordinarily boring.
However, while it still lasts, this game is worth buying. It's bad, but it's also very good.
Graphics - 4/10

The Actual Story - 2/10
Value for Money - 5/10

Length - Can't be rated, there isn't a definite point where the game ends, but you get bored after about 10 hours (counts as 6/10)
Extra Special Feature - Balanced ships and huge map
