Well, you could try the NES game it's based on.

You could also try Uncharted Waters 1 and 2 for the SNES, I remember them being AWESOME! Apart from that, I also want to know lol!

Try Port Royale 2. Not read much into the newest one (PR3) but I remember PR2 being fun. There's also a game by the same devs called "Tortuga: Pirates of the New World" which is similar. Both have a greater emphasis on trade than Pirates! does.

In terms of MMORPG there's "Pirates of the Burning Sea" but you'll find that a lot slower paced than Pirates!

I can honestly recommend Port Royale 2. Its controls are less polished (though still good), but it's a lot deeper game.

I actually played Port Royale 1 & 2 before I tried SM Pirates! and I found Pirates! very shallow in comparison, growing bored of it after 2-3 days. Of course, as the years passed, I learned to appreciate Pirates! for what it is - a simple, arcade adventure which doesn't offer too much, but what it does offer is really polished and fun. It's like pinball - you don't play it for weeks non-stop, but it's great fun in short bursts every now and then.

I keep coming back to Pirates! when I want some entertaining mindless little arcade action. When I want something with a more serious edge, I fire up Port Royale 2 or Patrician 3 & 4.

3Form mentioned another game called Tortuga: Pirates of the New World, also known as Tortuga: Pirate Hunter. That one is built on the Port Royale engine, only without the heavy economy bit, focusing more on sailing and combat, featuring easier controls. It's a nice game that offers pretty much the same experience as Pirates!, only Pirates! offers these features with a lot more polish. However, if you're bored of Pirates!, it's worth a shot as it's probably very cheap nowadays.

There's also a game called Pirates of the Caribbean, which is a 3D pirating sim. It's not as polished on its own, but the community created a supermod that adds a lot of features and greatly improves the game to the point where it's quite a worthy addition to any digital swashbuckling collection. Working your way up to finally find and capture a 1st rate Ship of the Line or a Man'o'War and witness its massive broadsides devastate your foes from an elegant full 3D perspective is definitely a pleasure worth experiencing.

There's also this game called Pirates of Black Cove. It's a pretty simple, non-serious pirating adventure game with some sweet graphics. If you're bored of everything else, it can be a fun diversion for a few hours at a time, though it really doesn't offer much so don't take this as my seal of approval, I grew bored of the game rather quick. However if you can grab it on sale really cheap, it's also a somewhat amusing albeit very limited arcadey shot at some caribbean adventuring.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Seadogs! It came out in the early 2000s and was great fun. Some of the highlights are great ship to ship combat, fun trading and a great sense of progression as you play the game. It's made by Bethesda (you know, the Skyrim developers) and definitely worth a look. It's been ~10 years since I've played it so hopefully it's aged well.

Seadogs became Pirates of the Caribbean, it was not made by Bethesda, it was published by them, Bethesda make RPG's. The developer (Akella) sought a new publisher after Seadogs but Bethesda wouldn't release the name and that is why Seadogs 2 became POTC.

Not that similar, but it is fun: Tropico 2: Pirate Cove.

Actually Pirates pre-dates the NES.

I played the original on my C=64.

I recommend Risen 2. I don't understand why it's so disliked. It's god damn awesome. Also, Ubisoft just announced AC IV, which will have pirate theme. That'll be awesome.

Back in september I forgot to even recommend my favourite Pirates!-a-like games, they would be the Port Royale series and the Patrician series, both are far more serious and in-depth than Pirates! but Port Royale has the same hidden mission type stuff when you ask around in taverns. Patrician is more straight-laced, less 'Pirates of the Caribbean' and more 'Mutiny on the Bounty'.

I'll second the Uncharted Waters series on the SNES. Those games were freaking amazing!

Uncharted Waters is good, but I like this game much better.

Age of Pirates 2
Done by the same people that did Pirates of the Caribbean (aka seadogs)

Risen 1 and 2 are very good games. Be warned though because the first few hours of these games will not hold your hand (especially Risen 1). Even if you get geared you can still die easily if you're not carefull. Risen 2 is more about pirates though.
