Back when I investigated this games compatibility- the only version I could find that had no problems was the GOG.com version- which I purchased during a sale. It includes Includes the 1987 original Sid Meier's Pirates! and 1993's Pirates! Gold. It is called "Pirates! Gold Plus"...It is superior to the steam version: with no compatibility issues on any windows platform from XP and newer-GOG.com has and will work to upgrade to any newer version of windows et al. as well as Mac: they have vastly superior customer service to any other seller/developer in all of gaming; they have and will and did even upgrade/give gamers/customers for free a more elaborate version if it didn't include every permutation of expansions/DLC et al..They did this with Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri when they later included the crossfire expansion that was not available on their initial release (I did not purchase it for this reason-even when it went on sale-as I am used to Steam et al. and how they ream you for every dlc when later offered even when it was not available on your initial purchase) You are authorized to burn it to disk and install it without an internet connection (albiet after your initial download)- like all GOG.com games: or redownload it at will... Revision of above post.... Two gamers pointed out to me that this version on steam is the newest of three versions- the gog.com version is not the same as this steam version. I have "Sid Meier's Pirates! live the life" on disk- which I now believe to be the same as steams version- thus my critique of this game's compatibility et al. is invalid: it is not the same game. Sorry if I steered anybody wrong. Thank You.

For what it's worth, I own the Gamersgate version and it runs flawlessly on Win7 64-bit.
Does it include both the 1987 and 1993 Pirates! releases? If it is also DRM free that would be something to consider as well- it would also be nice if it stated that it was windows xp/7/8 compatible like the GOG.com version which would give the gamer more assurance of its innate compatibility and/or the support of the seller/developer.

I'm either not reading the GOG description right or you're confusing the remakes. :)

The game sold on Steam as "Sid Meier's Pirates!" is the 2004 remake. GOG's Pirates! Gold Plus contains the 1987 original and the 1993 remake but not this 2004 one.

I assumed the OP was asking about the 2004 remake since that's the game this forum is tied to.

For the record though, I do love GOG and prefer it over any other distributor when it comes to old games. :)

I found my old disks and it runs fine on Windows 7 64 bit.
It runs fine on everything I tested so far which goes from windows 2000 to win7 64-bit, maybe not on 8, but that's to be verified.

No issues running it on win 7 64 bit.
The Steam version certainly does *not* run on my Win7 64 machine: I get a message reporting that Windows is dropping down to a more basic graphics mode, and then all I get's a black screen with a ship's wheel cursor spinning in it... FOREVER. (Well, until I give up and force-close the process, anyway.)

There again, it doesn't say it *does* run on Windows 7, so I guess it's my fault for not reading the description properly.
