Dungeon Siege 3: Crucial Tips.
Dear DS3 folks,

1. The save beacons are not checkpoints. Use each save beacon repeatedly to save your game as often as you like. You receive a health to maximum when you do too. Also you can overwrite saved games, so you don't accumulate to many. (Sometimes though it might be an idea not to overwrite.)

2. For PC mouse and keyboard, re-configure the control keys. Put 'A' and 'D' to straife/move left and right. Use the 'hold middle mouse' or 'hold right mouse', for camera rotate. Of course you can use the 'mouse to the edge of screen' for camera rotate. I adjusted quickly to these controls from almost the beginning and now love DS3.

3. Explore everything. I have found treasure chests missed, by going back and having another look round where I was before. Revisiting old areas very often makes you bump into new enemies put there for you. These all add up in your XP so you can level up more, before moving on in the game. Plus by defeating more baddies, you get more gold and items so there's a chance of getting better kit.

4. Practice practice practice 'defensive' play. It makes a real difference. When the baddies are firing anything at you, press 'space bar'. That's block, and most of the time prevents the player from getting hurt. Pressing 'space' when moving of course gives us movement like 'roll', or Anjali 'dash'. It also prevents any damage occuring.

5. In boss fights in an arena, you might as well turn off the mini-map. (It's only going to get in the way at times anyway.)

6. If you get really really stuck, do not dispair. You may change the difficulty setting. In the game, press escape to get the game menu. There you can change the difficulty, and remember to click apply. (If you reload with a save prior to changing difficulty, I think you have to change difficulty again.)

This is probably good advice when there is no other option. If you are locked in an arena with a tough opponent, then after a few hours it seems like a good idea. If you can freely retreat from your foe and do other mini-quests, that's got to be the wisest route. Gathering more XP and leveling up and seeking more equipment loot, makes exploration probably the better option.

7. If you have the DLC - Treasures of the Sun, you can start it when you have accomplished the Stonbridge tasks. It adds the Aranoi desert expedition. I believe it adds two other things. 1. Enchantment using essences. 2 - Level up to 35 instead of 30.

Thanks for all the info, just started the game and its great!
This game is funny :) I'm playing as Anjali and using Lucas as follower.
Thank you too, for feedback and keeping the thread on the first page, so other players locate it easily. Happy DS3...!

Hi folks, I'm just putting a note on this thread to bump it up to the top of the forums. The DS pack has been on sale again so these tips are for newcomers again. If you have any more tips please add them coz I'm confident folks will be happy if you do.
BTW, before I read this, I bound A + D keys to strafe left and right (rather than the default turning the camera, which made movement clunky). I also bound right-mouse button to free camera rotation, so I can combo strafe movement with right-mouse button to move fluidly. It's similar to other games like WoW when moving.
I think you might be right about right mouse button. It think it may be easier than middle button, and I saw others had written they had done it too. Thanks for writing and keeping the tips thread up at the top for others. I think it's worth editing the tips to take into consideration your input. I will of course leave a credit in there that you mentioned it. It's too true that movement was awkward without re-mapping, sometimes you wonder what they were thinking.

Just wanted to say thank you for the information, new to DS (bought on a steam sale and never played it) and the ability information is greatly appreciated!
That's OK. I think DS3 is a good game. Thank you for writing.

Armor is useless. It will take thousands of it before you even notice the difference and even then it will take just 1-2 hits more to kill you from common creeps, and bosses will sweep away half of your healthbar either way.

Don't try to make "balanced" char, stack 1-3 stats with every item with priority to damage modifying stats.

If you play Lucas, make sure to take Earthrending Strike at the first opportunity and buff its range at least once, unless you want to be buttblasted by enemies with damaging auras
I started playing DS3 again, and found I had to come back to read my tips. Stuff I forgot.

Like right now I am fighting with Rajani, and it's such a hard fight. Re-reading this page I re-discovered I could reduce the difficulty of DS. I will go back and have another go now at Rajani.

Plus I had forgotten what Agility and Will were.

Good luck with your DS3 folks.

Good guide, thjanks. First thing i did was change RMB to rotate cam, and completely turned off 'move to cursor', which would be great if it would just GO... but it stops when you let go? wtf?

In stonebridge, I got the notify about essences. "right click in the items screen" my butt.

How the hell do you apply essences?
