$40 for an expansion of a dead game, I lol'd
I was interested in seeing if they could breathe some life into this dead game. At least, it was basically dead when I played it several months ago...god knows how bad it is NOW. But for $40, I literally started laughing. WoW could pull off a $40...but come on.

So I have to ask, how many people are ACTUALLY playing the game right now, with this new expansion out? I'm curious how many actually spent $40 for it.
I'm mildly interested but i'll definitely wait till a sale, if there are people actually playing now.

EDIT: and i'm not TRYING to troll. I pre-ordered the collectors edition of this game, with high hopes for success....and then it kinda crashed and burned thanks to such a lack of content, and stayed dead because of that same problem. I've given the game a fair chunk of cash in subs, only to be let down. I ain't trollin', i've paid enough to be allowed this opinion.

Well.. I'm playing it (and was playing since the closed betas)... and about the game being "dead" please refer to the server loads... e.g. EU Icewatch server, has quite a lot of active players...
PS can't call all the frequent updates and the expansion (which came quite soon) with the world getting 3 times bigger a "lack of content"
PPS "i've paid enough to be allowed this opinion." no need to pay to have an opinion ;)

i bought it....and resubbed to rift. I have found active PUGs and groups for low and high level content every single night. Ive rarely waited more than 3-5 minutes for a group either. Id say this game is quite alive....

Surprisingly very active.

Only 316 active players = active game? :-P I know it's just on Steam, but LOTRO can do better than that! Then again, LOTRO is F2P, and Rift is not. I once again echo the fact Rift may benefit from a F2P model similar to LOTRO's.

Are you dumb? The game sells standalone. As in, it doesn't require steam, neither are the majority of its sales on Steam. There are thousands of players in US and EU. You're only seeing 316 from Steam, and Steam never sold MMOs well.

Is there anyplace else to buy the base game besides steam?

Yea, its called the freaking STORE.... my god are people so poorly equiped at window shopping now that Steam has been around for such a short time! Open your eyes, look at ANY PC store and you will find RIFT sitting on the shelves, right there. Same price as Steam but you get the hard-copy. Only down-side to that is you don't get the 'connectivity' of Steam. However Raptr seems to help with this a lot.

dead? oh ♥♥♥♥ ... no it isn't

Game is super active now and full most nights of EU shards. Defintely worth the money but most people seem not to go through steam as it does cost more than Trion directly

So, would you lot mind explaining how Rift is better than WoW? What does Rift actually offer that's worth paying for in terms of gameplay? I played it up to level 50 and it was hugely imbalanced, the gameplay was linear and it was labelled "WORLD OF WARCRAFT" all over. I don't mean to sound bitter here, but Rift does not have a value to be P2P especially if it wants to compete with WoW. Games like LOTRO, DDO, Allods and Aion are performing at a better pace in terms of content because more players are playing and want more from the game. How can you differentiate this from players like me who are not playing the game anymore?

Sure, call me ignorant that I made an understatement by producing a correlation with how many Steam players are actually playing Rift with the state of the game as a whole, but when I was playing my server was literally EMPTY.

Oh man, if you're doubting Rift you really have to give it another try. I played WoW to endgame, and Rift to endgame, and I can tell you that Rift is so vastly superiour the comparison itself is a joke. Yeah, millions still cling to WoW because the moment they let it go they know they have to start fresh somewhere, and all the time they threw away is of no value any longer. Such is the way with old-school mmo players--I know the feeling myself.

But honestly, Rift has everything WoW does and so much more, including (on any decent machine) phenomenal graphics, and a Lore that is so much more than man vs. orc. Anyway, I know insulting WoW isn't the way to convince people that Rift is superior, but WoW lost its creative relevancy a long, long time ago. Give Rift a shot, try out the new 'dimension' housing feature (and hit the '[' button so se what others have done with theirs. It is simply astounding. Anyway, what do you want? Competitive pvp? A wild amount of creative and fun dungeons? Huge guilds? Wicked and diverse mounts/weapons.armor? Rift has it all, plus one of the most deep and customizable class systems in the history of mmos--one that certainly blows anything WoW could imagine out of the water. That, and the updates...at a speed and size no other developer has ever dared. Give it a try, and thank me later.

Yikes. I spelled superior wrong...

Man I sure how you aren't referring to me, because I wouldn't touch WoW with a 3000ft pole. Whenever I needed a casual MMO fix, I hopped on Rift. Buuut it seemed every time I did it got deader and deader.
