yep it's maybe one of the most F2P friendly MMO's out there imo...I've bought this game pre-order and paid over 49$ for it...(I had like 4 main account since then...shame I lost my pre-order account) haven't regretten a single $ so far and I'm saying this based I have over 1200 hours just on steam...people seem to say it looks and feels like World of Warcraft but Idk since I played only until lvl 10 on WoW and uninstalled the game after...

you can pretty much grind most of the items and features in this game...it's doable but it's time consuming...for example I got only 1k platinum despite the amount of time I've spend getting that amount on my main necro char, getting most of it by selling lanzan bags and farming it for hours and hours...but it's a fun F2P game...but also a lot of time consuming aswell

for example...most of the pvp gear is farmable but if you got the money you can buy out all the gear and have an edge on pvp or pve...but it's a lot of more friendly on F2P aspect, the only game I played that I considered it was 100% F2P would be PoE (which I played without doubt more then the 1200 hours I got into RIFT) if you liked Diablo 1/2 I recommend you getting PoE (Path of Exile)
Many thanks mZK I think I'm going to download it :)

Not pay to win, you get the best of everything by just playing the game.

It certainly isn't pay to win. But you could call it pay to avoid grind. But then I am biased. I avoid engame rep and token grinds as the plague and usually roll an alt if I still like the game (as is in the case of Rift).

It's not pay to win but you can forget about getting any Event items unless you pay monthly or are willing to farm the event for 2-3 years.

With a sub. you get 40% more regular event currency, but you do not get more of the special currency, that goes with 1 quest in each phase - so, you can get the same items within ONE seasonal event, you only have to put in some more time.

And 2-3 years? What event are you talking about?

At the moment you can get an arclight mount for free from a lockbox from 2 quests, that can be done at level 30... or you do it with new alt. characters again and again with someone that sidekicks you to level 30.

And yeah, if you want one of those special mounts, you have to grind a lot, and a sub. won't help you with it, since EVERYONE gets the SAME amount of currency for the quests.

During the last real seasonal event, Fae Yule, every F2P player, that put in some time to get enough snowflakes, could get the same rewards as any other player with patron pass or a running sub.

Pay to win? Pay to win WHAT?!

Just play the game and have fun, and if you like it, buy a Rift Collectors/Ultimate/Normal Edition Game Box online, free your F2P account from the auctionhouse restriction, and get some nice other account upgrades for it.
If you like Rift, you can also get the ascend-a-friend code from my profile.

Some of the rare mounts are actually aquired by achievments on hard modes in dungeons.Like kill some boss without him hitting you with some of its variety of hits,or whithout healing and such, but thouse are mainly end game.

Yes, but even that is not influenced by a running sub. or a patron pass - a F2P player has the same chance to get that mount or any mount then someone with patronage.

At the moment we can see this proven by the arclightrider event, there are some with an event mount in nearly any free box they did get, and there are some with only random loot in boxes they did buy from the store, and it had nothing to do with a patronage too.

As people already stated this is not a p2w game. I have over 300 days played ingame(i run the launcher out of steam) and the things you can pay for are only helping you to speed up getting to endgame. There are some things you have to farm a few weeks for but can buy instantly aswell but everything is obtainable by farming. Trion launches promotional events where you are able to get currencies but you wont get enough for a special mount in that single event. Though you might be able to buy lock boxes for real life money and speed up the progress, but how is a mount going to make you win the game?

If you are endgame player even if you have a sub you have to spend either huge amount of time or grind plat/buy credits for upgrade items.
So endgame just like in most F2P games are P2Win, other parts are not. Most people dont care competivie raiding/PVP so they dont see this.
Other people just value their hundred hours of played time as free (those are the kids without any income).
I value 100 hours of boring grind (daily quests/running same dungeons 100times) at least 3000 bucks.

Yes, you can spend 100hours to grind out curency, but won't change the fact that the one who pays gets the upgraded gear instantly so you will be constantly left behind.

And the guy who pays, earns a lot more money in 100hours not grinding but working in its dayjob :D Depending his salary from 1500-6k USD usually.

Time is money. Nothing in life is free.

The game is free to play. But you have more of a grind when trying to upgrade certain things. You may easily pay for them rather than grind.
I downloaded the game last week , well it's amaizing ! My friend and I love it , the problem is we love PVP xD and in the game the player who pay got a big advantage and if you want to kill somebody easely in pvp you'll have to be an archer or a clerc . Anyway , the storry is amaizing the event too =)

The one thing you absolutely must buy is access to the auction house, you will get much more gold for your pickups and mats from the AH than from vendors.
Wolverine Jan 28, 2015 @ 3:26am
If you plan on spending some cash on Rift, do it the smart way:
-> Rift Collectors/Ultimate/Storm Legion Combo/Normal Edition Game Box,
-> Nightmare Tide Typhoon Edition,
the two soul packs:
- Storm Legion Souls
- Dream Souls
are more or less optional, and can be obtained later with ingame (get enough plat. and trade it with other player for REX, which will give you Credits to spend in the Rift Store) currency.

- with the game box comes a lot for your f2p account, and of course you will be able to use the auctionhouse fully now too.
- with the Typhoon, you will be able to use any gear (planar attunement...) and any gear slot (earring slots)
