the game has a ZELAOUS ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ PLAYER BASE, pretty much meaning the exsiting high ranking players will pretty much always be the same. The game isnt toxic in the slightest which is refreshing, but many zones are empty, and the low level pvp is pretty much nonexistent. overall id say try Guild Wars 2, since the base game (easilly 300-900 hours of gameplay) is now free, and GW2 is easilly the best free to play mmo out atm. Rift was awesome in its day, but alot better has come out since.
Again, plenty to do in Rift with everything thats great about any mmo you've ever played is probably in the game. It's not an inovative mmo, its just a perfect mmo.
GW2 does not have 300-900 of gameplay and has no where near the fun of rift classes/souls. I thought GW2 was completely boring and on top of that only the "base game" is free, which is the part that no one is going to be playing anymore because they ran around in circles in the main city for 900 hours.
For someone who never played MMO or like thing it's still okay till you level a character to top, especially if not in rush so just takes his time in the old areas. hardcore raiders and pvp-ers are probably out of luck.
EDIT: +
Also, reviews are at 81% (= really good) because of inertia. I just flipped mine 2 weeks age from + to -. Many people just forget about their review so it remains stuck even if they quit playing long ago and refers to a state of game that no longet exists.
While in GW2 you have to buy the new expansion to get access to the new class and the new area, and that is just fine.
Just download the game through Glyph directly from the Trion Worlds webpage, and take a look at it.
If you like what you see, you can grab the ascend-a-friend key from my profile for some extras.

Anyway, Rift is F2P, and the F2P system here in Rift is really fair.
For more informations about Rift, take a look at

and no one online but me .
About the equipment you can buy from the shop, that will be outdated at some point in the near future, and you just wasted your money on it.
The level cap will rise at some point too, and then that shiny second hand equipment from the Rift Store will be worse then some green new equipment.
If you enjoy Rift, and you want to spend some money, then go for
+ a cheap Rift Game Box or Game Code in any Edition you can find, to upgrade your F2P account
+ the Nightmare Tide Typhoon Edition, for the NMT perks
and that is it.
If you find a cheap code for the Storm Legion Expansion or a cheap Box online, sure, you can also go for that, but you don't have to.
The same goes for the Dream Souls and The Primalist calling... nice to have, but not needed to play Rift and have some fun.
... or just wait for another sale, where all prices are reduced 50%.
You can also use money gained in-game to purchase premium stuff. This can take several forms, one of which is trading or using the auction house to get REX. Redeeming REX gives you a chunk of the premium currency. The other is to trade with somebody that has a trade-able or gift-able premium item. You can also purchase premium items from the auction house. This means that you can get cash shop items such as mounts, service items, boosts, etcetera, by earning in-game non-premium currency. It does take a bit of work, but if you have the time to farm and play the auction house then it should reduce the need to spend real money whilst at the same time providing non-premium currency for those that do. There will likely be some other things that I haven't covered, so feel free to ask for clarification on anything that you are unclear about as any of the veteran players around here will certainly be able to answer.
To the primalist calling stuff, I suspect that it won't be long before Trion indicates a price in credits.
Or wait for a "Black Friday" or "Cyber Monday" sale.
