Sid Meier's Civilization III: Complete

Unfair trade? Are they kidding?
I am constantly being baraged by civilisations on the same map for like "I'll give you this research and we want this research plus a massive chunk of your cash" and if you even lower the amount of cash a little bit they refuse to accept. What the hell? Then if you aren't careful they often just declare war on your as a result.

Is there something I'm missing here or is this game designed with the strict idea that every leader there has ever been was a warmonging barbarian?

Yep, early Civ games have garbage AI. You live with it and just out produce them in SCI.

Only gets worse as the game goes on, demanding techs for their territory map, etc. Don't expect many offers that you will want.

On the lower half of the difficulty settings, I've found that if you clear the table except for the tech they wanted and then ask what they will give you, it will usually be pretty good as long as they have adequate gold/resources to trade and your tech is higher level, which should be the case if they are demanding it and gold; for some reason the AI thinks you should pay 1000 gold and second tier tech for Monarchy.

Every tech has its own hidden cost in gold. And this value is adjusted by difficulty settings, on "easy" its 1 to 1, on higher difficulty it can be like 1 to 0.5 (ai to ai trade) or 1 to 1.5 (ai to player) or even more.

I noticed that when they first aproach me, they want to trade only their maps for mine, plus a crap ton of other stuff from me. i tell them to screw off, then go to the foriegn advisor, reopen, and pick the map trade option and then they will trade maps straight across(or sometimes their territory for my world maps).

the more a civ hates you, the worse off your trade offers will be.
the more it likes you, the better.

attacking other civs (declaring war), burning down city's when conquered, or killing off civilians by hurru production, abandon city, or draft gives a LOT of negative world rep.

if you nuke other players that too.

this even happens if you are the one to be attacked (say some player attacks you.. you barely survive switch to war economy and manage to kick back.. and you deciede to take a huge chunk of their land as payback for all the costs that defending your OWN land costed you..
as well as tossing some bombs, nukes and all hell on them and burn a save "neutral zone" down between you 2. to prevent him from doing the same again..

well good luck every trading after that.
in general : do war, and take even 1 city, and forget trade after that.

Things that do give good reputation are doing trades, giving them favorable trades (give more than they ask)

Other things to remind : the AI often gives quite a lot of gold/turn for your tech.

this has the added advantage of the ai lowering it's techrate, preventing them from getting further ahead.

often selling your tech for x gold/turn, and use that gold to max out your science rate is smart.

(as much as 300 gold/turn can be gained for 1 little tech.. if you sell that same tech to a couple of civ's you will run a nice profit!)

the AI seems to value tech WAY higher than gold.. but for you as player tech IS gold.. so don't trade tech for tech.. trade tech for gold.. and use to gold to research that tech yourself... you'll be better off!

Well, there is such thing as science points. Each tech has its own value, that can be converted to gold to evaluate tech cost. When comparing 2 techs, AI actually compares techs value in science points. You can look these values in the editor by enabling game rules editing.
