Hooligans in my town

My 3rd try on this game and keep having trouble. First few turns are fine- settle my village ,fight off a few lions and start a few farms and things are growing nicely. I add a few settlers and start a couple more vilages and soon enough I have a nice green wobbly shaped circle around my little corner of the planet and everythings going according to plan.
Here's where the trouble starts: one f my little villages I founded isn't flying my flag anymore. There's a barbarian flag, and the village isn't within my colored zone anymore. Its like the bad neighbors have moved in and taken over the HOA and this is why we can't have nice things.
So I want my village back, I'm pretty sure its one of my settlers that started it. I build a bunch of warriors and horsemen and engineers and a couple catapult guys send them over to the village and .. and.. nothing happens. My guys get to the vilalge and I can't get them to fight or re-take the village or do anything.
How do I get my village back?

Please show us a screenshot.

If the settlement got taken over by barbarians, normally you'd be able to fight any garrison units and retake the settlement.
