I really wish I could like this game, I really do. But while the origional Fallout games have many good things about them, they suffer from many hiccups which make them an unenjoyable and even rage-inducing experience, and Fallout 2 is the worst example. I will cover the good and bad that this game has to offer, starting with the good.
-The world and story is very well set out, and sets a very chilling and depressing atmosphere. This is something that video games seem to have lost over recent years, but this game does it very well.
-The art style and animation is sweet For a game of its size made in 1998. Just look at the screenshots on the store page and you will see what I mean.
-The characters, quests, weapons and locations are very unique. Unlike later games such as Fallout: New Vegas where you travel to generic town #24 and kill Bandit group #117 with shotgun #13 that has a slightly different coloured grip from shotgun #6, in this game every person, town, weapon and quest is unique in its own special way.
And now the bad:
-The combat is rediculously unfair. It is good to have challenge in your game, but this is the wrong way to do it. The combat runs on a turn based system that uses action points to carry out actions. Seems good right? WRONG. No matter how many action points you have you chew them up insanley fast, and unless your weapon skills are cranked up to the max half of these action points will be wasted. Then once the enemies turn comes the only thing you can really do is bend over and ask for it gentle. Now, this isnt much of a problem once you are all leveled up and have the best armour, weapons, ect.. but for a large chunk of the game you will be screwed if you get in a fight. basically think of this games combat as Final Fantasy mixed with Dark souls.
-Random encounters. Enough said.
-It is really hard to progress in this game. When you start the game you are given a spear and a tatty 80 year old jumpsuit, and are told to go on a dangerous mission to retrieve an extreemly valuable artifact all by yourself. But the best part is is that a legion of heavily armoured, super advanced soldiers Called the Enclave are terrorising the wasteland, and it is your job to stop them. I'm sure that you will be able to do all that given your equipment and the games combat. Oh, and did I mention that finding a decent gun and armour in this game is very difficult? Have fun.
Overall, this game isn't bad as such, but it doesnt live up to todays standards. My advice: buy this game when it is on sale and make your own judgement.
