This is easily the worst Fallout game I have ever played. I just don't get it. Fallout 1 was a great game. One I am actually sad I didn't play when I was younger. I move on to this after it's been hailed as one of the best RPGs ever made, and no. Not even close. If this is the shining example of RPG's, we're ♥♥♥♥ed. A poorly programmed mess of a game with a FEW good ideas here and there brutally overshadowed by the single worst RNG I've ever seen. 80% may as well read a solid 0%, and I've never seen a game where not only does every enemy seem to crit every other move, but you can critically MISS, making already terrible combat even worse. And let's go on to the plot/story. I always hear a lot of people say "Ha ha, this game is funny," ... did I miss something? In FO1, it felt kinda serious and urgent. It was actually pretty FUN to advance the plot. Move on to this game, and though some characters are really cool, I just didn't feel the same degree of accomplishment I did from Fallout 1. A lot went out of the way to be annoying, it seems.
I dunno, I started Fallout with FO3, went on to New Vegas. Both spectacular games in my book. I go back to play FO1 and 2 in order, I beat FO1. It's as fun as 3 and NV in my books. Sure it's very old, but that didn't stop it from being entertaining. I get to the game that was supposed to retroactively be the best of the series, and I get... this. If all of my lifes problems would cease to exist if I recommended this game to my worst enemy, and my worst enemy would DIE as a result of my actions, I'd get somehow commended for it, and THEN I'd get a billion dollars, I still wouldn't recommed this game. What's worse is that I tried. I gave this game several chances. 70 hours worth of a chance. Each time I got far in the game, something would glitch out and render the game unplayable. And one time, a kind fellow on the message boards here suggested a mod which supposedly fixes things and restored cut content! It also removed the ability to steal from shopkeepers, taking one of the few fun mechanics out of a terrible game. I uninstalled the mod, and tried to get through the game once more. This time it decided to glitch out very EARLY in the game, and I can't really bring myself to try this broken mess again.
If there's anything I learned while playing FO2, it's this. Things can always get better. While this is the worst game for me in a series I love, and a terrible game overall, there's worse games than it. Far worse. At least I gave this time. Perhaps a little too much, but time all the same. At least the series returned with cool games like 3 and New Vegas. And what little I played of Van Buren's tech demo was more cohesive than this... but the moral of the story is yeah, one bad apple doesn't ruin the entire bunch.
