Having issues with running the game

Hello, I'm having issues with this game, I'm running it in Windows 7 64-bit and keep getting the mentioned rainbow colour glitch AND another wierd one, the entire screen seems to just go black during gameplay sometimes, moving the mouse around clears some of it and moving the screen clears some of it, but the screen still keeps turning completely black.

I've tried:
*Changing the compatability and running as admin
*Leaving the screen resolution menu open
*Looking through ddraw, but couldn't find the piece that I needed to edit for some fixes

Any help would be appreciated, since I can't seem to figure this one out on my own.

(Also, if it could be done without having to resort to modding the game, that would be great)

The two bugs you mentioned are known and fixable. However, this: "Also, if it could be done without having to resort to modding the game, that would be great" makes it very difficult to find a solution for your problem.
The reason for the black screen is an issue in refreshing. Can be fixed with F1Res or the FIXT mod. You find them both on NMA.
