Problems with downloading Dedicated Server?
In Alpha 4.0, we have finally separated the Client and Server. You can now download “Empyrion - Galactic Survival Dedicated Server” from the Steam client via Library -> Tools

If the Empyrion dedicated server does not show up under Tools in your Library, you can install it via SteamCMD as follows:

1. Install SteamCMD from https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/SteamCMD
2. Exit SteamCMD with "Quit"
3. Open console/command line prompt (http://www.wikihow.com/Open-the-Command-Prompt-in-Windows) and navigate to the directory you installed SteamCMD. E.g.: cd C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\SteamCMD
4. Enter the following command:
steamcmd +login anonymous +force_install_dir "../Empyrion - Dedicated Server" +app_update 530870 +quit

Following this procedure will install the Empyrion Dedicated Server in the folder “Empyrion – Dedicated Server” besides the folder where steamcmd is installed. If needed, you may change the folder name to your liking.

You can also create a script that will automatically update the server when you click on it. See "Automating SteamCMD" https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/SteamCMD#Downloading_an_app

That is the command-line, if you were to enter it in SteamCMD directly (as it sounds like you have - you have effectively gone wrong from number 3 on the instructions) then you would need to remove "steamcmd" from the command. If you are running it via batch file, command-prompt or other means then you would do as the OP says.

EDIT: Additional note: don't forget to alter the install path to your desired location.

Press WIN+R. Type CMD and press enter. Then navigate to your SteamCMD folder. e.g
C: <enter>
cd\ <enter>
cd steamcmd <enter>
steamcmd +login anonymous +force_install_dir "../Empyrion - Dedicated Server" +app_update 530870 +quit <enter>

lol. Anytime my friend - glad you got it working!

Alternatively you can create a .bat (batch) file with the commands to do this - or even use the Game Server Manager to do this all automatically (e.g. updates etc.).

Batch File Method
Create a file - call it whatever you like as long as it has the ".bat" extension. Edit the file in notepad and put the following in there:
@echo off C: cd\ cd steamcmd steamcmd +login anonymous +force_install_dir "../Empyrion - Dedicated Server" +app_update 530870 +quit

Run the batch file.

If you want the window to stay open after completion (so you can see what happened), add "pause" (sans-quotes) as the last line in the file.

Game Server Manager
Check out the guide below - the program contains a wealth of features to help you.

How about a step by step on setting up a dedicatedserver w/o using steamcmd (hate it).
Also would be nice for a dedicatedserver readme.txt doc that comes with the dedicated server in the tool section. Not really hard to keep that updated everytime you change it! is it?

Check task manager, it might already be running.

I used to have trouble updating the Empyrion server with the shell, so, I switched to the gui version and just run it from the steam library>tools>empyrion-galactic survival dedicated server.
Updates great; just keep in mind you'll have to have a vid card that supports new directx.
Well for some reason i can't make it work anymore.
I used to have a server and it worked fine but now i can't even find my own server anymore.
He seems to be running but when i check the save folder i see an folder with only a folder containing the name of the game (as it should be) but in that folder you have only Sectors and 2 files ( difficulties.dat and game.dat ). If i check the other folders i had from previous versions there were a lot more. It looks like the game was not initialized or started as ishould be.

Any help?

I installed it via steamcmd and changed the yaml file as usual.

Check the screen on https://imagebin.ca/v/3TEtZW8Dd27m

I have deleted everything and installed everything back from scratch. Same result.
Shouldn't there be a lot more files in there?
To be sure i reinstalled steamcmd AND empyrion. Nothing helps.

Additional info: I run a minecraft server on the same server as Empyrion and i can connect to that minecraft server without a problem. So don't say it is my network.

Easiest way is to create the updater batch file while in the SteamCMD directory, then copy the file and create a shortcut and put it in the Empyrion server directory. That is, once you get it working.

This is my update batch verbatim. Of course, you need to change the part between double quotes:

steamcmd.exe +login anonymous +force_install_dir "X:/SteamLibrary/steamapps/common/Empyrion" +app_update 530870 +quit

pause

--eof--

If you create this within the SteamCMD directory, you don't have to worry about all the path stuff. The long string is all one line. The PAUSE is just there to see if everything went as expected.

This is where those of us who started using MSDOS have an advantage :)
