It is now over a decade since Psychonauts was released, and this is my first play through. Even with that much time, this game is still solid. While the graphics may be a bit dated, the art is smartly conceived to hide the then current system limitations as style. Speaking of style, the art will likely be a hit for some and a miss for others. I really enjoyed the quirky, exaggerated look of each character. The voice actors do a wonderful job of lending unique character to each of your fellow campers and instructors.
As far as game play goes, this is fairly standard 3D platformer fare. That isn't to say that it isn't interesting, though. You play as Raz, a psychic prodigy who has crashed a summer camp for psychic training. As you progress you earn merit badges that grant you new psychic abilities such as pyrokinesis, telekinesis, and psychic blasts. The game is littered with collectibles, and completing the collectibles grants you bonuses to your abilities. This provide a nice enticement to return to previously explored areas.
The difficulty level is rather uneven, but in general, tough. You'll definitely want to play this one with a game pad, as the keyboard controls make it rather difficult to navigate some areas. Unfortunately the control hints are all bound to the keyboard, so you'll spend a bit of time experimenting with the controller until you get it down.
I really enjoyed playing through Psychonauts, and I can easily recommend it to anyone.
