Linux crash when playing cutscene
So I got enough cards to get level 10 to get my first ability (or what it's called), I went to the place and then a cutscene starts playing and the game instantly crashes.

I get the following console output:

I already checked the file which exists. Checked the files via steam, without any results. Every other cutscene did play without problems.

I just had a crash in lungfishopolis, as soon as I touched on to coachamara island (or however you spell it). Restarting the game just takes me right back to the start of the whole level, and I really can't be bothered to play it all through again right now just to see if it will do it again.

I don't know any of that log stuff but okay, try saving before you enter the lab.
Then as you enter the room, do not to let go of the keys you pressed when the cutscene starts.
Sometimes releasing them on the start of a cutscene, crashes the game.

I used the "continue" feature in the main menu, and that's when I arrive at the lab (otherwise I would have to replay).

It's kind of late but I had the same problem and I found this page looking for a solution so here is how I solved it:


  1. Open a terminal and cd to the directory your game is installed on (in my case it was ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Psychonauts )
  2. Find the problematic file ( in your case, WorkResource/cutscenes/prerendered/firestartingmeritbadge.bik
  3. Replace the problematic file by copying another cinematic (.bik) file from the same directory and renaming it to the same name of the problematic file. For example:
    mv WorkResource/cutscenes/prerendered/INTRO.bik WorkResource/cutscenes/prerendered/firestartingmeritbadge.bik

This way you will still be unable to see the original cinematic but you will be able to continue playing.
