Just a tip for anyone who "suffers" from the update, disable auto updating for the game or uninstall the game at all if it bothers you that much. It's really not that big of a deal to let it update overnight or something.
Imagine living in an area which only could handle dial up, were talking 24-50kb/s download speed.
1.4gb would take about 2-3 days.....
Pretty much answered your own question there. It just is how steam handles Multi-OS titles.
