Constant Crashes (Windows 8)
I have tried administrator rights and various compatability settings but nothing seems to work. The game crashes on loading screens, but not on levels. When I start it back up I'll resume in the area it was trying to load, but if I try to go to another area it freezes up and crashes on the loading screen. I am on windows 8, and don't know if that would be the issue. No matter what it is I'd appreciate any help.

(Update) I verified psychonauts and it downloaded one file, and then I removed all of the compatibility settings I had applied. After doing this the game worked perfectly for a time. I went to all the areas on the main map just to test the game, all of which loaded fine, but when I tried to go to the underground sanctuary it crashed on loading screen again.

(Update 2) I've put my game into windows 95 compatibility mode and that seems to have partially fixed it. I have had some crashes but it isn't as much of an issue and is largely stable. However this caused a different problem, the game is now much harder for my computer to run and the framerate has taken a hit.

I have the exact same issue and am also running Windows 8. I've tried to leave the first area after Basic Braining and every time I start it up it crashes on the loading screen.

I, too have this problem, and immediately after Basic Braining.

I have this issue too, only a diffent OS. Does the exact same thing with Win 7. It seems to occur randomly too. One time it'll crash on the 1st loading screen, the next it'll go more than an hour, hopping over half the map with no issues.

Same problem here with Win 7. It's completely random how many loading screens it goes through but it will eventually crash during map change.

The same thing happened to me, have to go to Properties-Compatibility-Mode Compatibility-Windows XP (Service Pack 3) and this fix the problem of crashes

It may seem like it fixes the problem, but give it a few hours. you'll probably end up crashing again.

Same problem. Same OS

Have you tried updating drivers?

Yes, to no avail. Windows 8 having problems with old games isn't exactly a new concept. Unfortunately, such games rarely get fixes. Tis a sad day for old gaming.

Hm, thanks for the detail. We'll have at this on Windows 8 and see if we can narrow down a cause and prospective fix.

While you're at it, if I may be so bold, I had a problem the last time I tried to play the game, wherein once I reached Sasha's Shooting Gallery, when he's explaining how to shoot and there's the tube with the censors shooting out, you're supposed to proceed by Sasha leaving, and you punching the dial up to max, yet he never leaves and the dial never goes up. I haven't tried to reach this point to try again, but reloading the level never fixed the problem. I'll let you know (sometime in the next week) if it happens on the playthrough I just started.

There were a few threads about this when it happened, but none with any official response or possible fixes. Unfortunately they're apparently lost to the ages.

Oh, and of course, this was on Windows 8.

Game crashes randomly on my computer, under Windows 7 (64 bit). It's starting to bother me a little bit... and it is a shame being such a great game.

Strange, I have Win8, and 14 hours played with only one crash. Was after beating Milla's Dance Party. It wasn't too bad because the games autosaves at every loading screen, so there's no progress loss.

It very well may be getting better with age. Happers with every new OS. It even could be hardware problems. Something about specific drivers on win8 for certain graphics cards.

I'm having the same problem on win7...ironically back when I had a *ahem* illicitly procured copy, it worked flawlessly, never crashed once...go fig :(
