UFO_ET.EXE Stopped Working
Windows 7, i7-2600k, Nvidia 560Ti, latest drivers, 16gb RAM, DX11 - basically over kill for this game but it fails to start.

Every time I try and start this it pauses for a second, preps the scdreen for the start - i.e. goes black and then gives me the "UFO_ET.EXE HAS STOPPED WORKING." error message and completely ceases and desists.

Since there seems to be nothing out there to explain or clarify this - can someone tell me how I get my money back?

Same thing is happening with me. Funny thing is I played it for about four hours last night and only today has this started happening. I can't find a way around it.

If its of any help to you I discovered that the problem was that the game couldn't run using my sound card for some reason. It works fine when I plug in my headset though. I have no idea why.

It happens to me when I sell a building in my base - I want to put in an advanced lab :(

Had the same problem.
Solution for me was to disable the second display.... seems that the game has a problem when one runs windows with multiple displays.

But who plays this one, when there is XCOM Enemy Unknown......

I've managed to play 34 hours of this game, but am now getting the exact same error on game start - running Windows8 on a laptop (without compatibility mode), no change of hardware, was working fine, now no go.

Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\UFO Extraterrestrials Gold

FInd 'UFO_ET.exe' and right click on it. Select 'Properties'. Click the 'Compatability tab. Under 'Compatability Mode' go to the drop down menu field and select 'Windows XP (Service Pack 3)' after clicking the 'Run this program in compatability mode for' box.

I hope this helps.

EDIT IN: Also make sure you have the Direct X 9.0 installed .dll somewhere, since the default Direct X 11 that comes with Windows 7 or later, does not have it installed as default usually. Older games cannot usually recognize Direct X 11 and need to find that Direct X 9.0 .dll.

This Microsoft Support page provides some info on this about half-way down:

If you follow the link to the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer, it will provide you with a way to get what you may need:

That might be the issue. A lot of games need to find that file.

If it is not that I can only guess. Sometimes it might not like HDMI monitors or sound. HDMI did not exist at the time. HDMI sends both a sound and a video signal combined down it's cable. So anyway, when it tries to detect sound card, it probably can't figure out an HDMI set-up.

So, I'd be guessing, but I would assume you need to use whatever is not the HDMI sound set-up as default, make sure that it knows to use headphones or whatever is that sound in the correct choice, make sure you do not have multiple displays enabled, make sure that if you have an Nvidia Optimus gpu you can direct it to know somehow, and otherwise might want to try a monitor with other than HDMI cable, if nothing else works.

Usually programs of this era or older that have an issue with something I listed, have a problemm with some or all of the others in the list. Thus the guess.

i have Windows 8.1 x64 and i can't install direct X 9. It's for Win XP ;-)
i was on the page, but i can't find your way what u mean.
I have HDMI, but i use my "Creative Sound Blaster Z" Soundcard.
Okay, i use multiple displays (3 displays). i tried it with only 1 display, but i get the same problem again and again.
so i am not sure, what i can do now.
