Black Mesa Offical FAQ
Here are some Frequently Asked Questions about Black Mesa and the OFFICIAL answers. A big “thank you!” to WhiteZero for having a fantastic unofficial FAQ that helped a ton of people.

FAQ

First, if you want to know what is new in the Steam release, check out our post “Why Buy Black Mesa on Steam”.

Why are you doing multiplayer updates when all we want is Xen?
Often there are times when not every team member can work on Xen due to timelines and bottlenecks. We focus people on other elements of the game while those are worked out. We occasionally dedicate team members to multiplayer for important tasks like major bug fixes or important projects(like Crossfire).

So it’s just a reskin of Half-Life 1?
We completely remade the game from scratch (though we did use the original levels as reference). We tried to design the game as Valve would if they had the Source engine when they made Half-Life. It is obviously very close to the original in terms of story and setting, but we tried to update any design elements that didn't work or were outdated (I'll let the players decide how successful we were). We completely remade all the visuals and the game is largely made up of custom assets.

Does this release include Xen?
Not yet. We are currently working on Xen and it will be a FREE update to the Steam version. We are targeting a Xen release of summer 2017! We will keep the community update with our progress.

You said the Black Mesa mod would be free! Why are you charging for it now?
After we were Greenlit, Valve offered to let us sell the game on Steam . We had to decide to continue to develop the game for free, with limited resources, or go retail. After the mod release we decided that having income would greatly help the development process and it has proved invaluable. The original mod release is still free, but no longer supported.

Will the mod be updated with Xen and other features when it’s finished?
Unfortunately it is impossible to backport our new features to the mod engine. With the retail version we have access to parts of the engine we could not touch in the mod version.

Why charge $20 for an unfinished game?
This is the nature of Early Access. It is intended to support the developer as they work on the game. You pay for the game now, get access to the current, unfinished game plus updates as they are available, and access to the finished game (including Xen) when released.

Will it be ported to Source 2 engine?
Good god, no! We would pretty much have to start from scratch!

Will non-English translation be available?
Yes, we currently have closed captions for these languages:

Finnish
German
Norwegian
Spanish
French
Portuguese
Russian

They can be accessed through the options menu. More closed captions to come...

Where are the Uncut chapters?
Surface Tension: UNCUT is now released! Check it out in the main game.

You can also access “On A Rail: Uncut” on our workshop! We will not be implementing it into the retail game.

Will Black Mesa have Mac and Linux Support?
Yes! Linux is out. Linux laid a lot of the ground work for Mac so we are hoping it will be a quick port. As soon as our Xen tasks are out of the way we will start on Mac.

Where can I get the Soundtrack?
You can get the full soundtrack here:
www.joelnielsen.com/bms/

Will you be re-making Opposing Force and Blue Shift too?
Crowbar Collective will not be re-creating the Half-Life expansions. There are, however, a number of community projects that are working on them:

Operation: Black Mesa - http://www.moddb.com/mods/operation-black-mesa
Guard Duty - http://www.moddb.com/mods/guardduty
Black Mesa: Insecurity - http://www.moddb.com/mods/black-mesa-insecurity

Will there be a Black Mesa console port?
Nope, we are not able to do console ports for a number of reasons. Sorry!

How do I upload to the workshop?
http://forums.blackmesasource.com/index.php/Thread/28820-Black-Mesa-Mod-Publishing-tool-Guide-How-use-and-edit-workshop-submissions/?postID=617451#post617451

How complete is Black Mesa?
The single player is roughly 80% complete and multiplayer has deathmatch and team deathmatch. The game is fully playable through Lambda Complex (the last earthbound level before Xen). It represents 8-12 hours of gameplay.

Will mod save files work with Black Mesa?
No, mod files will not work with the retail game. Due to the way the engine deals with save files, they will often break from update to update. You can however use the console to unlock the chapters and start from where you left off.

Co-op?
We have early plans for co-op after Xen is completed. There is a lot more to making a good co-op game than just putting multiple people in the single player campaign. We would want to make something that was custom built for co-op. This is something we can’t commit to saying a timeline for at the moment. (Sorry!)

Sorry if I missed it somewhere in here, but:
Is the current price point expected to be the same on full release, or will it be lower or higher?

If you're asking if the price is going to change when Xen is released, the answer is no.

Essentially, if the release of Xen coincides with the game coming out of early access. Thanks for the prompt reply!

While we're on the topic of "Yes, we want to do it, but it's a while out" we should also ask:

What type of Co-Op do you guys want to see? Something like L4D2's waves of zombies going through a narrative? The SP campaign remade for 2 players? A completely new style of co-op? Something tower defense-like? If you got an idea, be specific about it!

IMO you should scrap the entire coop campaign idea. Half-Life (and coincidentally BM) was meant to be an immersive, story-driven FPS. Coop flat-out ruins that atmosphere. Developing it even after Xen release would just take an immeasurable amount of time with little to no reward. Sure, there are things like Sven Coop and Synergy, but they were fan-made mods for standalone games some time after their release (the amount of threads asking for coop went up to double digits for the last month or two though, along Sven's Steam release). If that makes sense, BM Coop should be a fan-made mod idea aswell, perhaps as a Decay remake by a group of some gifted modders. Something plain and simple in the veins of UT2004's Invasion mode would do fine for the official multiplayer. It could use more modes overall.

Are you going to add native Steam Controller support?

Should already be in there no? We uploaded a Steam controler configuration.

....ok, I was just about to wait for the full release to buy, but if you're one of the small handfuls of devs incorporating native SC support, I'm going to have to snag this puppy right now as a sign of approval.

Awesome! Thanks. Let us know what you think of the game and the controller config.

A friend bought me this for Christmas, and I just wanted to say it's pretty awesome. Maybe I'll buy someone else a copy, since it's definitely worth the cost.

What point of development of Xen are you guys at? Have you guys made maps (even incomplete ones) for the Xen chapters?

Also I forget does Gordon lose all his weapons when he goes through the Portal?
